In "Cults In Our Midst: Patty Hearst And The Brainwashing Of America," Morabito starts by lengthily recounting the horrible Hearst story: kidnapping, isolation, repeated rape, and "a coarse Maoist style program of indoctrination and re-education" in which she was told "that 'Amerikkka' was a racist and evil society, repeatedly calling her a privileged 'bourgeoise bitch' and her father a 'pig' of the 'corporate fascist state,'" which broke Hearst and turned her into Tania.
Regular readers will have already guessed that Morabito connects the closet-rape-Maoist-Amerikkka-fascist state program to mainstream Democratic values. Ah, but how she does it, that's the thing! Her first move is to link Hearst's brainwashing to that time "the White House launched a 'behavioral insights team' assigned with the task of 'improving policies' through insights into human behavior." I covered that "nudge squad" thing last year -- if that's mind-control, then so is advertising. Norabito seems to anticipate that normal people might feel that way, and so goes for the neckrub-that-becomes-a-headlock rhetorical twist:
We take as a given that political persuasion is part of public life. But likewise we take as a given that deliberate government manipulation of the populace using the techniques of unwitting or coercive persuasion represents a grave threat to our freedoms.Tomato, to-mah-to. Later Norabito lists Margaret Thaler Singer's "six conditions that create an atmosphere conducive to coercive persuasion":
- Keep the person unaware that there is an agenda to control or change the person and their thoughts
- Control time and physical environment
- Create a sense of powerlessness, fear, and dependency
- Suppress old behavior and attitudes
- Instill new behavior and attitudes
- Put forth a closed system of logic.
The frightening realization is that these techniques work on mass audiences as well. We can see hints in the phenomenon we call “political correctness"...No, wait, it gets better:
The seismic and manufactured public opinion “shift” on same sex marriage in the past several of years is a glaring example of how coercive persuasion works. That's right -- America has been brainwashed gay-friendly. And you thought Will & Grace was just a funny TV show!
Label anyone who disagrees as a bigot or a "hater," a non-person. Reward those who agree with public accolades. Before you know it, even well-known old conservative pundits who fear becoming irrelevant sign on to it, and thus contribute to the juggernaut.I hope she'll follow up by telling us how the same techniques turned a brainwashed nation against racial segregation. I mean, it can't have been anything else, right?
Conservatives are presently inclined to attribute any election they lose to America's majority of "low information voters." But Norabito points in a new direction: Maybe now when they lose, even in opinion polls, they'll tell themselves it's not because voters are stupid, it's because they're brainwashed! The real fun will come when try deprogramming the voters.
UPDATE. In comments, Roger Ailes and satch confess their gay brainwashing started with The Hollywood Squares. "Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly were not only funny," says satch, "but persuasive, making them early 'Choice Architects.' Damn those subversive game shows!!!"
Similarly, says coozledad, "I was a conservative until Hawkeye Pierce made Frank Burns look like an asshole."
Meanwhile mortimer finds a Morabito essay on Cosmos. Excerpt:
This is propaganda of the crudest sort, reminiscent of how Stalin’s Soviet Union characterized non-communists, or how the Hutus of Rwanda characterized the Tutsis, or, most famously, how the Third Reich characterized Jews.I'd say, "I'll have to start following Morabito," but I fear she wouldn't accept I meant this in the traditional sense of reading her work as it comes out, and assume that I was tailing her for ObamaHitler.
Liberal fascism is a boot nudging you into having a 401k/health insurance forever.
ReplyDeleteKidnapping and mental reprogramming are now things that not horrible when they happen to people who aren't conservatives, but are horrible when they don't happen to people who are conservative. Please update your lists.
ReplyDeleteBut claims of brainwashing when someone votes for or believes WrongThing have been floating around forever. It is what people say when they don't want to call the people who committed WrongThing stupid. "Oh you poor thing, you've been programmed to think that way..."
"Patti Hearst"? "Political correctness"? She needs some new material; this stuff is seriously stale.
ReplyDelete"Put forth a closed system of logic." Ah, I see where the envy comes in.
ReplyDeleteDoes her name mean much of anything to anyone outside the mid-40s+ crowd?
ReplyDeleteI find it both funny as hell and sad as shit, that the most pampered asses get all "I'm being opressed!", when they at most stub their toe. Entitlement reform should start with the weird fantasies of conversatives.
ReplyDeleteRemember that guy who came up with that long-ass explanation of how Obama was brainwashing the entire country (http://www.pennypresslv.com/Obama%27s_Use_of_Hidden_Hypnosis_techniques_in_His_Speeches.pdf) back during the '08 campaign?
ReplyDeleteThese guys have a lot of work to do to achieve that level of frenzy.
It's brilliant! Because a moderate Democrat in the White House = the Symbionese Liberation Army! Up against the wall, running dogs of the fascist state!
ReplyDeleteWiki-ing the whole SLA thing, I am reminded that the whole spree began with the murder of a school superintendent who was leading an effort to introduce an ID-card system into the Oakland schools. Just like Obama care!
ReplyDeletePatty Hearst was brainwashed by black SLA members. America is now brainwashed by a black president.
ReplyDeleteMore than coincidence? YOU decide!
[Patty Hearst

Of Rolland's Thompson gun and bought it.]
Alex jones and David Icke are on the case!
ReplyDeleteGood fucking grief.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's never a simple difference of opinion about policy. It's never attitudes and opinions arrived at through personal experience and education. It's brainwashing, it's lies, it's hypocrisy, It's pure evil from the 10th dimension. There's sinister motives around every corner, and if it's not communists, then it's gay marriage, or 'liberal fascism' whatever that's supposed to mean.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that our side is winning.
ReplyDeleteTAKE THAT!, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, etc.!
~
But likewise we take as a given that deliberate government manipulation
ReplyDeleteof the populace using the techniques of unwitting or coercive persuasion
represents a grave threat to our freedoms.
Persuasion is bad, but it's not the gravest threat to our freedoms: the government is deliberately forcing the populace to conform our actions to its will via "laws," too!
You missed the best part - Morabito's solution to stopping the brainwashing:
ReplyDeleteMaybe it’s really all about reaching out and building happy personal relationships without expecting anything in return. Maybe it’s about letting others in your personal sphere — work, school, or neighborhood – know what you believe, especially those who like you and trust you.
So, rant about your political beliefs to all your co-workers and neighbors, regardless of whether they want to hear it or not. Got it. Are you sure your target audience needed to be told to do this?
It will never be stale to a mindset that blames priests' pederastery on the "corrupting counterculture" of the sixties. It is the go-to decade for the ills of the world. Evil Hippies, the gift that keeps on giving.
ReplyDeleteWell, I thought Will & Grace was a TV show. But I'd been 'washed and blown dry by The Hollywood Squares long ago.
ReplyDeleteUp against the wall, running dogs of the fascist state!
ReplyDeleteNo, seriously: The line for bank bailouts is over by that wall.
Yesterday's academic indoctrination is today's political brainwashing. Either way this woman is stoking conservatives' fears that they will be treated as outsiders, even by their elite.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the brethren will be happy with her solution of reaching out to your neighbors with trust in your heart and refusing to censor your racist and homophobic language. They see themselves as the abused children of the Republican Party family and they don't trust anyone.
Maybe it’s really all about reaching out and building happy personal relationships without expecting anything in return.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. Keep that up long enough, and the recipients might switch to your political viewpoint in return, exactly as expected.
The frightening realization is that these techniques work on mass audiences as well. We can see hints in the phenomena we called "The war on terror" and "Iraq has weapons of mass destruction" and "Innovative financial instruments" as well as "The ownership society". Worked like a charm.
ReplyDeleteMore than half the population ate that shit with a spoon until we spent their retirement.
There's a little bit of that money left. You know in your heart you want us to have it.
You know in your heart you want us to have it.
You know in your heart...
I was a conservative until The Brady Bunch brainwashed me into sharing and caring.
ReplyDeleteI was a conservative until Hawkeye Pierce made Frank Burns look like an asshole.
ReplyDeleteYou can always depend on the kindness of strangers.
ReplyDeleteAs in "Mickey Morabito"? Wonder if they are related...he was a pretty lousy ballplayer, she's a pretty poor thinker. Now, THERE'S a relationship!
ReplyDeleteMaybe it’s about letting others in your personal sphere — work, school,
ReplyDeleteor neighborhood – know what you believe, especially those who like you
and trust you...
until that number dwindles to zero.
obama: ...They’re our neighbors, they’re our friends -- young and old; black, white; men, women; PhDs and GEDs. The interesting thing, by the way, is statistically the long-term unemployed are oftentimes slightly better educated, in some cases better qualified than folks who just lost their job. Just because you’ve been out of work for a while does not mean that you are not a hard worker. It just means you had bad luck or you were in the wrong industry, or you lived in a region of the country that’s catching up a little slower than others in the recovery.
ReplyDeleteAlso, why don't you pass the time by playing a little solitaire?

ReplyDeletePlus, Sanger? Needs moar Alinsky.
ReplyDeleteNow there's a result I can expect. And have observed.
ReplyDeleteI meant Hearst.
ReplyDeleteMeshes nicely with the SHOVING THINGS DOWN OUR THROATS narrative/fears.
ReplyDeleteNever mind fear of a black planet. It is fear of a black penis for those trogs.
Yeah, well, that's science, which apparently means you're a person so SALT GRAIN.
ReplyDeleteWait, what? Conservatives are scheming to win over "low-information voters"? That's like the drunk looking for his car keys under the street lamp because the light is better there. "I got one! He *was* going to vote for Rand Paul, but I convinced him to vote for Ted Cruz!"
ReplyDeleteConservatives are presently inclined to attribute any election they lose to America's majority of "low information voters."
ReplyDeleteAnd how many elections do they imagine they would win without "low-information voters"?
"Maybe it's about letting others in your personal sphere---work, school, or neighborhood--- know what you believe, especially those who like and trust you..."
ReplyDeleteYes... and when you refer to them as "Low Information Voters", do it in a tone of voice that inspires love and trust...
The Golden Girls--lesbian brainwashing.
ReplyDeleteGilligan's Island--the fall of capitalism and its parasites and the triumph of collectivism brainwashing
The Honeymooners--"income inequality" brainwashing.
Telly Tubbies--post-nuclear hermaphrodite brainwashing.

Alinsky? Needs more Skousen.
ReplyDeleteYou don't even want to know the road the Banana Splits were taking us down. But it rhymes with "curries".
ReplyDelete'Cause, well, "high-information voters" wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot ballot.
ReplyDeleteYou know, she didn't have to look forty years back to find an example of those "six conditions that create an atmosphere conducive to coercive persuasion". I wonder what she said then.
ReplyDeleteKeep the person unaware that there is an agenda to control or change the person and their thoughts
ReplyDeleteI wished I had known that before I kidnapped these conservatives, fed them full of drugs, and started bombarding them with loud music and disturbing images. My bad.
Obama really does have a better way.
So the Daily Show is the equivalent of Hutu Hate Radio? That makes sense--I've been looking for a machete for years now without knowing why.
ReplyDeleteSomehow your bleak avatar coupled by this deadpan comment ("I meant Hearst") is just the funniest thing in the world.
ReplyDeleteIf they could "reach out and build happy personal relationships without expecting anything in return..." they'd be normal people, also: liberals. Its the inability to reach out, inability to form happy personal relationships and inability to simply interact with the voters without a quid pro goddamned quo that trips them up.
ReplyDelete- Keep the person unaware that there is an agenda to control or change the person and their thoughts
ReplyDelete- Control time and physical environment
- Create a sense of powerlessness, fear, and dependency
- Suppress old behavior and attitudes
- Instill new behavior and attitudes
- Put forth a closed system of logic.

ReplyDeleteAlso bombarding them with drugs. What do you think Medicare Part D is all about?
ReplyDelete"post-nuclear hermaphrodite brainwashing."
ReplyDeleteYou say that like it's a bad thing.
Dear me. Someone was boot-stomped by the playground Sorting Hat.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been fascinated by the phenomenon of political correctness ever since I experienced social dynamics as a child in public school. Many of us have come to realize that whether in the schoolyard or in Congress, it’s the same manipulative force at play. When adults fear social rejection for expressing a non-PC thought, they tend to respond like children who are threatened with the schoolyard taunt of “cooties.” They gravitate towards those who have not been tainted and avoid those who have been. All the while, a mysteriously anointed elite makes the rules and picks the winners and losers. The majority just seems to go along with it, even though they have the power to stop it. My interest in this peculiarity intensified as I studied the history of communism and totalitarianism, and the intense propaganda campaigns that labelled free thinkers as “non-persons.”
The freedom to hate and fear is a delicate plant and must be watered with the blood of patriots.
I confess that my gay brainwashing started with Rob Halford.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN7S7kCqGKk
"My interest in this peculiarity intensified as I studied the history of communism..."
ReplyDelete...and, well, Mandrake, I first became aware of my cruel victimization at the hands of the unanointed playground elite during the physical act of Kickball. I noticed that my personal inability to hit a ball accurately with my foot coincided with my rejection by my fellow students from either of the opposing teams. I have since then declined to participate in any elementary school athletic contests. Third graders sense my power, and seek to choose me for their teams. I don't avoid third graders, but I do deny them my presence on their Kickball teams.
Wow liberal fascism = Khmer Rouge = Killing Fields!
ReplyDeleteYou don't know what it's liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike!
ReplyDeleteColbert has Anduril sitting right out there in public! CONNECT THE DOTS SHEEPLE
ReplyDeleteMy early brainwashing: the United Federation of Planets didn't have money, plus Mr. Spock was more than a bit touchy-feely with all those mind melds; the Care Bears wouldn't stop staring, plus they were in all the colors of the rainbow, know what I mean, plus they're bears, nudge nudge. (I was in my twenties when they were a thing, but you're never too late for a brainwashing!)
ReplyDelete"Label anyone who disagrees as a bigot or a "hater," a non-person. Reward those who agree with public accolades. Before you know it, even well-known old conservative pundits who fear becoming irrelevant sign on to it, and thus contribute to the juggernaut."
ReplyDeleteI hope she'll follow up by telling us how the same techniques turned a brainwashed nation against racial segregation. I mean, it can't have been anything else, right?
Well, you know, there's a case to be made that those were valuable techniques in turning the country against racial segregation.
The same techniques were used to turn us against, e.g., the Third Reich and the Soviet Union, so... you know, there's that.
You can understand their chagrin - after spending 35 years actively working to produce low-information voters via underfunding schools, creating an entire fake news universe & etc., they now discover that either they're failures at creating dumbasses or they haven't created enough of them to succeed.
ReplyDeleteRE: Cosmos:
ReplyDelete[Cosmos claims] — in error — that the Church as a whole persecuted Bruno for his views on science and his imagination — when the reality was that the personalities running the church at the time went after him for his theological views.
Boy howdy that is some serious hair-splitting. Similarly, it wasn't the Soviet Union that carried out show trials, it was the personalities running the Soviet Union at the time! It wasn't the Nazis who persecuted Jews, it was the personalities running the Nazi party at the time!
It sounds like that episode of Cosmos may have been a bit confusing and inaccurate, although on the other hand I think Cosmos writer Steven Soter defends the segment quite well.
I think most of the SLA was white. Donald DeFreeze, a.k.a. Cinque, is the only black one that I remember.
ReplyDeleteAnd how many elections do they imagine they would win without "low-information voters"?
ReplyDeleteElections? What makes you think they want to waste any time on those?
Hey, thanks for that link to the piece with Soter and his interlocutor. It was actually a great, great, think piece by both writers. I really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU FELLOW SCIENTICIAN
ReplyDeleteIt's an ill wingnut that blow no one some good.
ReplyDelete[Cosmos claims] — in error — that the Church as a whole persecuted Bruno for his views on science and his imagination — when the reality was that the personalities running the church at the time went after him for his theological views.
ReplyDeleteI love the clarity of thought on display here. Such a perfect reflection of the conservative mindset that some institutions are inherently "good" (churches, the Republican Party, the NRA, large corporations) regardless of what the "personalities running them" do, while other institutions are inherently "bad" (the Democrat Party, unions, Planned Parenthood, ACORN) because of the personalities running them. Liberals. Evil, dirty out-to-get-you liberals...blaaaarrrggghhh
I also find it a bit touching how dismissive she is of the fact that it is the power of large institutions that allows the personalities running them to get away with pretty much whatever they want to do, and that institutions are in fact defined by the personalities who comprise them. If you have an institution where the personalities running it have powers to torture and execute, the only way you're going to be able to prevent any specific personality from torturing and executing on the basis of personal grievance is for the others in the institution to step in and stop it. If they don't, then the institution is what it is - a reflection of the personalities running it - people who don't want to call out the abuses of others in the institution for the fear that it might curtail or call into question their own abuses.
I always thought that was

ReplyDeleteShit, just a few years ago Glen Beck got people riled up about Woodrow Wilson. I'm shocked we don't hear derisive comments about Democrat letting people into the White House to eat giant slabs of cheese.
Another example of how the movement can't fail, but can only be failed. If a Democrat wins, its because s/he stole the election. If that story doesn't work, it's because of low-information voters. If that idea fails to gel, its because the Liberals have brainwashed the nation...
ReplyDeleteThe next step will be "the only reason Hillary won is because of the alien mind ray she stole from Vince Foster"

ReplyDelete"Say, [Fellow wage-slave] in case you're too dense to have figured it out, didja know I'm a crypto-fascist?"
ReplyDeleteBoy, she really is on the fast train to Fuckwitsville in that one, isn't she? Neil Tyson is the new Leni Riefenstahl, Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Jean de Dieu Kamuhanda all rolled into one. Doesn't the Hayden Planetarium realize just how incredibly dangerous this man is?
ReplyDeleteThe bit about Bruno, though, is so far over the top that you'd need a jet pack to catch up to it: "If so, you probably watched with interest an odd cartoon that was
injected into it. The program featured some revisionist history in
order to produce a thinly-veiled hit piece on Christians. You can watch
it here. Take special note at 1:24. Right smack dab in the center of
focus is the Cross of Christ, just below a set of demonically-lit eyes
of a church figure."
Well, lessee, the scene takes place in a monastery, and the "demonically-lit eyes" belong to a church official who has discovered him reading a banned book (the series suggests it was Lucretius, but was likely banned writings of Erasmus), and since he was evicted from the monastery, well, just maybe "demonically-lit" could also be official anger at his supposed heresies. Moreover, this sort of glosses over the known facts--that Bruno was imprisoned for ten years, was tortured by the Inquisition and was burned at the stake, for the great crime against a consolidated church and state of disagreeing with dogma. That was the point of Tyson's narrative about Giordano Bruno--that free inquiry cannot exist when there is no separation of church and state and I suspect that is what's really gotten Morabito's garters in knots.
Sometimes, the truth just stings like a motherfucker.
I want to watch this comment in reruns every evening between 7 and 8.

ReplyDeleteConsider that a child who becomes self aware asks: “Where did I come from?” It’s an existential question at its very core. And the most meaningful answer is that the child physically came from a relationship between his mother and his father, both of whom the child knows in a relationship of his or her own. This answer — the relationship — empowers all of us with the security
and stability to go out into the world and create all manner of healthy
friendships and relationships with others.
I don't have all manner of healthy friendships and relationships with others because I don't think about my parents doin' it? That... explains a lot, actually.

ReplyDeleteAnyone who spends any time watching how the talking point and Luntz phrase of the day gets picked up by the right-wing talkers and pundits would not use the term "freethinker" to describe them. Hell, just in the last year, the sycophants have pretty much worn out the word, "Benghazi," as just one example. To paraphrase Ms. Parker, conservative thought runs the gamut of ideas from A to B.
ReplyDeleteAny bunch that depends as much on appeals to authority and defense of dogma and rubber=glue illogic as conservatives do can't be said to be freethinkers, let alone sane.
The "conservatives are emotionally stunted husks of wasted humanity" theory, eh? I dunno, while it would warm the cockles of my black little heart to think so, I find it a bit dubious...
ReplyDeleteI do think that a genuinely nice and kind person would by necessity have to be a liberal, of course. Such a person could not support conservative policies, because they all involve hurting someone until the world behaves the way you want it to. Similarly, I think the most heinous assholes out there will naturally gravitate towards conservatism because, hey, what a great excuse to get to hurt people!
However, most people fall into what I like to call the "standard-issue douchebag" category. They're the people who can behave in a civilised enough fashion to not annoy random bystanders overmuch, who can form relationships on the basis of mutual appreciation of each other's company and can be someone's friend, albeit of the fair-weather variety. You know, normal people. The kind who are only mostly worthless. And the bulk of both the liberal and conservative ranks seem to be made up by those.
Too much ranting? Sorry. I suppose I just wanted to say that I disagree that not expecting anything in return in a personal relationship is "normal," let alone a trait of the typical liberal. And that I disagree that the normal amount of giving and kindness (which I think is what both she and you are thinking of) necessitates liberalism.
That technique you describe is the "Gish gallop" I'd embed a link but I'm using my phone and my thick fingers are taxed enough just typing this comment.
ReplyDeleteTell 'em WR Hearst was the original Murdoch, only more interesting.
ReplyDeleteAh! Someone else who's memorized the lyrics!
ReplyDeleteHell they are still furious about all the sharing that goes on in kindergarten indictrination camp. Nap time? Another crushing technique of soul repression.
ReplyDeleteLow information voters belong to the other side. Brainwashed voters are what we call our voters who slip away and start not hating the homos or accepting the aca.
ReplyDeleteThat "not conservative enough" argument always drives me bananas.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I wanted Rick Santorum to be the Republican's nominee in 2012. I thought, "if they run a True Conservative, and the public soundly rejects his ideas, then... oh who am I kidding?"
Hey, did anybody else think that Giordano Bruno in Cosmos looked a little bit like George Harrison...?
ReplyDeletePerfectly stated.
ReplyDeleteI've personally seen people nod their heads in unison at Rush Limbaugh's words when he's on the radio. That's a creepy thing to see, and the word "freethinker" doesn't spring to mind.
...
ReplyDeleteWell, that didn't post like I wanted it too. I thought it would be smaller, and I thought it would be rotating.
ReplyDeleteSorry 'bout that.
Brainwashing? It's like the Crane Technique... when done correctly, no can defend.

I didn't know that the Republicans are trying to distance themselves with Rand Paul.
ReplyDeleteToo bad. I was looking forward to hearing him explain why he chose Jack Hunter, "The Southern Avenger" to co-write his book on Libertarianism.
Particularly since, historically, the leaders of the Catholic Church have always stated that their authority came from the Catholic Church.
ReplyDeleteActually, SCIENCE! has shown that almost any positive relationship with an adult can help a child establish healthy relationships later in life. It could be a grandparent, aunt, or family friend. The important thing is that they have someone who values them and helps them.
ReplyDeleteChildren are no fools. They know when they can't depend on their parents and are treated like property. The physical relationship to the child doesn't change these adults' behavior and the child does not establish a bond with very bad parents.
"Where did I come from" is one of the less important questions in life. Who am I, how will I give my life purpose, by what standards will I live, what do I value---these are much more important questions. But they give the individual power over his own life. Conservatives think of power as something transferred genetically.
I hope one day this woman sits down to watch Modern Family because the explosion would be amusing.
ReplyDeleteWhaddaya mean, it *is* rotating. I think...yeah, it's...no, wait....I'm faaaaaaaaalllllllllliiiiiiinnn.....
ReplyDeleteOK, I gotta get a new chair.
Good!
ReplyDeleteYou've got to be carefully taught...
ReplyDeleteWhich is why they go for the school boards first.
Glad I scrolled down, because "psychotic " is what I was about to call that mess. Well, more like "that is some real nutso shit, right there", but close enough...
ReplyDeleteI used to work with a MegaDittohead, and he was all about "intellect!". While the guy wasn't stupid--quite the opposite, actually--he literally fell both head-over-heels and hook-line-n-sinker for every word out of that blimp's piehole. And when I called him on some of the more egregious stuff, like the Chelsea Clinton pic, and mocking Michael J fox, the best I'd get was a sort of sheepish half-grin, and "weeeeeeellll...'. I swear, he almost scuffed his shoes together like a kid. Then he'd pop back to life with some accusation about some perceived Liberal wrongdoing somewhere in the Cosmos, and within a few minutes I was Hitler. Again. Funniest thing is he actually thinks everybody agrees with him (a couple in the office did, sorta) but had no idea that everybody else in the office, out in the shop, and half the job superintendents out in the field thought he was bonkers, and rolled their eyes when they talked about him. There's yer fanbase, Rusty, cherish 'em...
ReplyDeleteWith at least one war notched into the pearl handle of his paper... .
ReplyDeleteDamn. And here I thought she just disappeared into the world of very rich people who used to be somebody...
ReplyDeleteThe 10 Million Commandments...
ReplyDeleteIOTTMCO...
ReplyDeleteExcept for the "logic" bit...
ReplyDeleteNot only that, but they cahooted when Tyson was a teenager...
ReplyDeleteReagan was wrong. Facts aren't stupid things, they're quantum things, and only appear to observers that want to see them. This may help explain the unfathomably low number of Righty scientists. They get tired of looking at the instruments in college and seeing...nothing. Calculators, scales, measuring devices of all kinds read 000.00 no matter what they do. Their Lefty labmates read their figures and take their notes, and when Righty sneeks a peek, he sees...000.00. This is undoubtedly what leads to their distrust of science in general, and their insistence that "Lefty" scientists are just making it all up.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you pointed out that your co-worker was not stupid. I've worked with people like that too.
ReplyDeleteMany liberals make the mistake of assuming that people who believe Rightwing media must be stupid. That isn't always true. Even intelligent people can be persuaded by bad ideas.
Or John Waters fans.
ReplyDeleteI listened to the show for a couple years, and never heard what I'd ID as a mouth-breather. Granted, "Bo Snerdly" probably wouldn't have let any through...
ReplyDeleteAlso too, you hear the "I work with this Dittohead..." from people working in highrise offices of one sort or another. Dingbats generally don't get hired for that kind of work. Mostly they WUWIAGS.
ReplyDeleteHa ha!
ReplyDeleteIt occurs to me that there's LOTS of dingbats in the world, and gas stations really don't need that many people to work them any more...
Actually, I think many conservatives are perfectly able to build personal relationships and care selflessly about those close to them. It's extending those sympathies to people in the out-group that causes problems. My welfare check/health insurance/abortion/gay child is different!
ReplyDeleteI think they misspelled fact-chucker.
ReplyDelete"This is propaganda of the crudest sort, reminiscent of how Stalin’s Soviet Union characterized non-communists, or how the Hutus of Rwanda characterized the Tutsis, or, most famously, how the Third Reich characterized Jews."
ReplyDeleteHmmm, who else has regularly used crude propaganda to paint their opponents as horrifically unmoral monsters, even to the point of redefining basic words as terms of abuse...
Ms. Morabito, *surely* you know the answer to this one. ;)
Tomato, to-mah-to
ReplyDeleteThat's to-may-to, tomato. Unless, of course, all these years I've been getting the fifth month of the year and the lady who gave birth to me mixed up.
How would you feel if one of your daughters became a fundamentalist Christian or Young Republican or something of that nature? I doubt you'd disown them. Alan Keyes would look down on you.
ReplyDeleteHe already looks down on me.
