NEW VOICE COLUMN UP...

...about the NSA revelations and the rightbloggers' quick change into civil libertarians. As with other conservative masquerades, the proof of the pudding will be in the legislating.

There are several amusing (well, he said self-deprecatingly, to me...) individual cases in the column, but I didn't add any by Jim Hoft because once you get started with that guy you just can't stop mocking. It's not just the clash between his former, fuck-rights-save-the-homeland ravings (2007: "No FISA- No Security... The Left blogosphere believes that allowing terrorists to communicate openly is the right thing to do") and his deep, new concern for the Fourth Amendment, nor even his credulousness toward the crazy ("NSA Whistleblower: Obama Took Down General Petraeus By Using Illegal Surveillance"); here he is claiming we were "warned" about Obama's tyranny by... Maxine Waters. Previously he had called Waters a "socialist" and described her as one of the "Rats Leaving [the] Sinking Ship" of the Obama movement -- in 2011.  The inside of his head must be like a constant light show.

which for north of five grand and if he can pitch the shit into the sky, he might be able to bank, and our town might get a fourth of July display (currently canceled.)

"... I didn't add any by Jim Hoft because once you get started with that guy you just can't stop mocking."

    Smart move.

But, worth mentioning that no end of right-wingers were applauding Obama not all that long ago for perpetuating all the horrid and horrifying abuses begun in earnest by Little Boots.

Now that there's some real shit meandering around the mainstream, that gives them an opportunity to blame Obama, they're happily piling on, like all the Peanuts characters in a mound of fall leaves.

The bigger question, which they're even more happily avoiding, is that of what makes Presidents turn into even more rancid copies of E. Howard Hunt the moment they take the oath of office?

There's an institutional paranoia concentrated in fairly small parts of the government, mainly situated in Ft. Meade, Maryland, Langley, Virginia, in that big five-sided building in Arlington, Pennsylvania Avenue, D.C., and in the hallowed halls of Wall Street, that seems to take even the most expansive view of the Constitution and narrow it down to us against them (them being all American citizens except themselves, and the rest of friggin' world).

What the wingers won't say, and should, if they really want to come into the 21st century, is: "fuck me, these paranoid fuckers are more dangerous to us than the terrorists, and we really ought to do something about it."

But, they won't, because they're still stuck in a time warp, when authoritarians like G. Gordon Liddy and Ollie North make their little fourth-grade egos swell with pride (not to mention their penises), and the black man in the White House just makes them sad.

Obama is just as afraid of being seen as a wimp as the Elder Bush, and he's done some incredibly stupid and venal things because of that fear. He's taken the advice of thoroughly paranoid people. He's ignored the plain language of the Bill of Rights (c'mon, Barack, I know you understand the legal meaning of "shall" and "shall not").

But, he hasn't done anything any differently, when it comes to preserving the national security state, than any other President since Truman. (Except, in part, Kennedy, who just might have been offed because he didn't kiss the ass of a bunch of disgruntled Bastistas who got shorted on some mob money by Castro.)

If a Republican gets into the White House after the 2016 election, you can forget all of this whining about rights, because the crackpots will want even bigger crackdowns on the public--fuck `em, starve `em, make `em squeal lak pigs, because we're in charge agin.

They don't anything else, and they don't know any better.

Oh, yeah, Booz Allen Hamilton issued a statement on its employee:

Booz Allen Statement on Reports of Leaked Information

    June 9, 2013

    Booz
Allen can confirm that Edward Snowden, 29, has been an employee of our
firm for less than 3 months, assigned to a team in Hawaii. News reports
that this individual has claimed to have leaked classified information
are shocking, and if accurate, this action represents a grave violation
of the code of conduct and core values of our firm. We will work closely
with our clients and authorities in their investigation of this matter.

When one goes to "Connect Booz Allen," to send them a nasty note, there's this:

    Follow us on Linked In

    Find us on SlideShare

Add Us to Your Google+ Circle

Fuckers. They'll do anything for money, even sell out the people and the Constitution. If they're so goddamned patriotic, we ought to find out what they think of legislation barring war profiteering.

Watch `em scream bloody murder at doing what they're doing without profit.

Hmm... might any of that YouTube footage involve Booz Allen employees line dancing? Or, say, some kind of Star Trek parody? There's a split between righties who think Obama should be impeached for spying on Americans and those who think he should be impeached for not spying enough. They're coming together, but it's hard to imagine how the indictment will read.

Is there any phrase in political discourse less meaningful than "small government"?

I mean, McCarthy can somehow claim that he's an advocate of small government, and then turn right around and advocate an enormous, secret, unaccountable, no doubt expensive, expansive, centralized, federal spy program.

Like... what could "big government" possibly mean to him that isn't covered by these programs?

    ReplyDelete

  31. BigHank537:59 AM

"Big government" is anything that affects him personally: tax collection, restrictions on firearms, speed limits, ethanol in his gasoline. He'll occasionally stretch this to cover some poor beleaguered soul he thinks belongs in his in-group, like JP Morgan Chase or the Koch brothers when they're suffering under the boot heel of the SEC or the EPA.

"Small government", of course, is anything done to maintain the privileges that he enjoys as a white male. As long as he doesn't get the bill for it.

There actually aren't any good arguments left for putting ethanol in gasoline. It produced slightly better exhaust emissions thirty-odd years ago, so It was mandated for areas with poor air quality, particularly during the winter months. Nowadays modern engine management systems keep things a lot cleaner all of the time.

Of course, 80% of the ethanol subsidies go straight into the pockets of the noted corporate straight-shooter Archer Daniels Midland, and their lobbyists are making sure that keeps on happening.

The fuel produced vs fuel expended to make a gallon of corn ethanol is pretty much 1:1, so yeah it's a bad deal. You could take the gallon of gas needed to raise the corn, make the pesticides and herbicides applied to the corn, harvest and transport the corn, fuel the factory which turns the corn into ethanol to produce that gallon of corn ethanol and put it directly into the gas tank and you'd be ahead of the game. Not only would you be saving money by not paying out subsidies to grow the corn (after paying out subsidies to the oil company to extract and refine the fuel needed to grow the corn), you'd be dumping less chemicals onto the land (and by using less chemicals, also consuming less oil) to run off into rivers & lakes, you'd have less soil erosion if a more environmentally suitable crop was being grown instead of the corn or if you turned the land to pasture, and you'd save a shit-ton of water. The only reason for corn ethanol is as you state - ADM and a few others are raking in billions making it and, mostly, collecting subsidies for growing the corn to make it. Take away the subsidies and corn ethanol is an economic loser.

I used to attend these back in the day...the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon laser light show was a perennial favorite. They'd project images onto the ceiling of the local university planetarium, some of them just groovy patterns and some of them blindingly obvious, such as a little bunny rabbit hopping for the line "Run...rabbit run..." What can I say; stoners are easily amused and when I was a teenager we didn't have any of that new-fangled MTV, and that's the way it was and we LIKED it that way!
I think back to those light shows and ponder the fact that the images in the one playing in Hoft's head are even MORE devoid of meaning than most of those in the stoner show.
