Moderator: As more of accused Charleston shooter Dylann Roof’s racist beliefs come to light, some are suggesting that South Carolina take down the Confederate battle flag that flies on its capitol grounds. Others say the flag is part of Southern heritage and has nothing to do with Roof’s twisted ideas. To discuss this we have here in our studios Rev. Walter Hudson of the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, which has just had a bomb threat, and Beauregard T. Dogwhistle, a member of the Fritters, Alabama city council. Before we begin, though, I have to ask Mr. Dogwhistle: Is that actually a Confederate uniform you’re wearing?
Dogwhistle: Indeed it is, suh. This heah is the unifo'm of a colonel in th’ Ahmy o’ No’thern Vuhginny, ve’y lahk one woah by mah great-gran’pappy at Seven Pines and Chancellorsville. It even has some o’ mah great-gran'pappy’s buttons and so fo’th — the original clawth coul’n’t last, o’ co’se, soaked as it wah with all thet Yankee blood my grand-grandpappy spilled at Chancellorsville! (laughs) Musta kiwwed fifty Federals thet week with his swo’d alone (mimes swordplay). Oh, thet wah a great vict'ry, suh!
Moderator: Mr. Dogwhistle, the Civil War cost the lives of more than 600,000 men and, more to the point, ended a hundred and fifty years ago. Why do you think it appropriate to wear on this program a Confederate uniform, particularly after a horrible tragedy like the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church?
Dogwhistle: Why, suh, they is a princ’ple at stake heah! When this heah Roof fella killed them — well, Af’ican Amer’cans, guess ah’m s’posed to call ‘em — that-all had nothin’ to do with mah heh’tage! And thet flag is mah heh’tage, suh, just as this heah uniform is, and ah see nothin’ t' be ashamed of in eithah! If’n them folks don’ wish to see it, wew suh, they can lowah they eyes o’ sumpin’.
Moderator: Well, Mr. Dogwhistle, when some people, particularly African-Americans, see the battle flag and your uniform, they can’t help but think about the war fought by your grand-grandfather and others to defend the institution that made them slaves.
Dogwhistle: Slanders, suh! Why, the woah had nothin’ to do with slavery nohow. No, we was fightin’ ‘cause we was invaded, an’ ah don’t give a hang foah Foat Sumter — thet wah a what d’ye call it nah, a fawse flag, thet’s it, a fawse flag t’ covah Yankee aggressiousness --
Rev. Hudson: Well, Mr. Dogwhistle, you know that’s just not so. Not only the leaders but the Confederate Constitution show that —
Dogwhistle: (coldly) Excuse me, Mistah Moderatah, yo’ guess heah don’t seem t’ know he is interruptin’ a whaht man.
Moderator: Mr. Dogwhistle, I don’t even know what to say in response to that. Do you really expect us to abide by your openly racist standard of behavior?
Dogwhistle: Of c’ose I expect’ yo t’ honnuh it, suh; it is mah heh’tage. An’ ah dispute yo’ calling’ it racist. Whah, suh, there ain’t no moah racism in thet requiahment o’ mah dignity than they is in mah flag, o’ mah unifo’m, o mah collection o’ manacles an’ slave collahs an’ such lahk, no mattah what them statist rapscallions at eBay say about it. My heh’tage ain’t jes’ symbols; it’s mah whole way o’ lahf, passed dahn bah mah great-gran’pappy an’ f’um his great-gran’pappy. When you Yankees took owuh slaves, we still fahnd ways to keep our heh’tage, lahk with Jim Crow an’ the poll tax; an’ when y’all took thet fum us, we put it in legislation and gerrymand’rin’ and po-licin’ an’ whatnawt. It hain’t lahk it waws, but at leas' we all know how we feel ‘bout things and hah it’s s’posed t’ be, an’ if thet ain’t heh’tage, whut is? As fo' yo’ guess, ah was civ'lized -- ah didn’t use no “n-wo’d,” did ah? No, ah restrained mahse’f, an’ ah mus’ say it put a cramp in mah vocabulerry t’ do so. Now ah have obse'ved yo’ No’thun customs thus fah, an’ I expec’ y’all to obse've mahn. A man can only be pushed so fah!
Moderator: Mr. Dogwhistle, these security guards will escort you out of the building.
Dogwhistle: Humph! Ah guess Jonah Goldberg was raht -- you lib’ruls just woanna silence the opposition!
Oh fucking bravo. You've rendered the rebonics of Dogwhistle magnificently. Very funny to boot. Heah, heah!

Sooner or later we're going to learn something about Fuckhead's parents, aren't we? I assume the FBI has been pretty far up their asses by now. All I've read about them so far is the quote about not giving interviews ever.
ReplyDeleteThere we go.
ReplyDeleteSadly, No! is back? Why wasn't I informed of this?
ReplyDeleteIt has always been around, just with fewer and busier peoples.

Maybe busier is not entirely accurate, but fewer for sure.

Oh, sure, but would he dare to write a black guy's dialogue in phonetic dialect? This proves the only real racism today is against Southern whites.

No interviews, not no way, not no how, eh? Ain't *never* gonna be made to explain giving the whacko kid a .45 for his B'day. No suh!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid in the Fifties we lived in Birmingham, Alabama, for a year. This explains why General Sherman is my favorite American historical figure. The South is a very pretty place -- dogwood trees, wild roses, lots of green -- such a shame that it's still inhabited by so many narrow-minded bigots.
ReplyDeleteI haven't the stomach to look at/confirm many details, but headlines in my news feeder indicate both his father & uncle called the police & identified him when they saw his picture.
ReplyDeleteThat mighty white of ya sa. Much obliged .
ReplyDeleteGood stuff and I must say that Birdwhistle sounds awfully like Groucho assuming the persona of Col. Hawkins of the Florida Medical Board in "A Day at the Races.''
ReplyDeleteShhhh.
ReplyDeleteThat's a joke, boy.
ReplyDeleteYou are most assuredly welcome!
ReplyDelete...
It's not even the South Carolina confederate flag, they had their own so why fly the Army of Northern Virginia's battle flag and claim it stands for your state's heritage? It stands for pissing people off and rubbing peoples' noses in it.
ReplyDeleteThen what are you bothering me fo, Yankee?
ReplyDeleteThe more we learn about Dylann Storm Roof the more he seems to have walked around shouting "I am a time bomb! Tick tick tick!" And yet none of those good guys with guns ever got around to dealing with this bad guy with a gun. Curious.
ReplyDeleteWell, smoke my ham, fan my brow, pone my corn, fry my chitterlings, blow my mind, and you ain't just whistling Dixie, suh!
ReplyDeleteFlying the flag dates to just a few years before Southern whites' mass exodus to the Republican party. Fun bit of trivia, I'm sure it has nothing to do with anything.
ReplyDeleteYou had me at pone my corn...I think I will see if i might convince some kids to call it that on the 'morrow!

ReplyDelete"He's one of the 'good ones', if'n you know whut Ah mean."
Heh, poning the corn...

ReplyDeleteSerious question, here (which I posed long ago to the Family Linguist, who was no help): what in God's name was the pronunciation of "goin'" that was intended to be captured by the eye-dialect (the term she used for your "phonetic dialect") expression "gwine"? And is any such pronunciation still out there somewhere (hipster minstrel shows don't count)?
ReplyDeleteAnd all the locals seem to be saying that, in spite of all the signals, he seemed like a pretty normal white boy. White boys will be white boys and all.

Properly eye dialect is when it doesn't correspond to the ear. Like I shamefully used "whut" above, to represent something that sounds exactly the way I say "what" only you can tell by looking that I'm thinking of the imaginary southerner.
ReplyDeleteIn fact "gwine" seems to be a real word in Gullah or Sea Island Creole from the ancient black communities of the SC/GA/FL coast, regarded not as a dialect of English but a distinct language; it derives not from "goin'" but "gonna" and is used to mark future tense as in "Uh gwine he'p dem" (I will help them).
First they came for our Secesh flags...
ReplyDelete~
Pleased to note, though it's mean, that he belongs with his family to St. Paul's Lutheran in Columbia. So if he's at war with Christianity no need to drive all the way to Charleston.
ReplyDeleteAlexander Pope:
ReplyDeleteGood-nature and good-sense must ever join;
To err is human, to forgive divine.
In the 18th Century "oi" was pronounced (in at least some cases) so it rhymed with "ai". It is still pronounced that way all over the English-speaking Caribbean, not among the middle and upper classes but among the majority black Caribbean people who grew up speaking the various versions of English creole. They say "gwine" for "going" and the "o" generally gets flattened out into "a". It's a class marker there. In some of the Eastern Caribbean islands it comes out as "gyine" or "gyoine" where the "gy" is like in "drag you" but the "o" is more at the back of the throat, not the way Americans say "o."
Thank you! (The erroneous definition of "eye dialect" was all mine, I'm sure; the FL is flawless.) Many uses of it—including a whole slew of them on the first page of Google hits, including several in The Land We Love: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Literature, Military History, and Agriculture, apparently published in The Confederate States of America (though Google may be a bit confused here)‐clearly are with the meaning of "goin'"; is this an error (or deliberate mistake made for jocular and/or racist purposes) on the behalf of white transcribers, or did southern blacks who weren't native speakers of Gullah appropriate the word into the BVE of the time, and then let the meaning drift as meanings so often do?
ReplyDeleteComments at places like Mediaite haven't quite reached the blatant "It's difficult to condone without qualification the way Dylann went about expressing his understandable anger, but..." stage, but they're getting there. And quite a few righties are proudly proclaiming that the Civil War had zip to do with slavery, but was a righteous response to the years of liberal Northern oppression WHICH CONTINUES TO THIS VERY DAY.
ReplyDeleteEvery now and then, something like this happens to blow the lid off the beautifully wrapped box labelled "American values" and expose the rancid viciousness lurking in the darker corners. But needless to say it will all be ancient history by this time next week, and the guy who wants to introduce a bill taking down the rebel flag will quietly change his mind.
I'd guess a bit of all of the above. Kia below has what has to be the correct account of the sound development which would apply fine to "goin" by itself.
ReplyDeleteHere is the mighty outrage summoned by Gateway Pundit Hoft:SHOCK VIDEO: Angry Woman Calls for Race War Outside Emanuel AME Church
ReplyDelete& BB.
First comment at Gateway Pundit:Lol...careful what you wish for Shaminookatoyyameeka. You won't like how it turns out. There are not only more of us, and who are heavily armed, but we're equally if not more tired of BLACK racist crap-the BIGGEST racists in modern-day ObamAmeriKa.Cornered animal time yet?
In the twenty years that I spent in New Orleans, which is the liberal bastion of Louisiana, I met exactly one person who I actually believed was just proud to be a southerner. I could not detect an ounce of racism in him. Every fucking other person that was born and bred there was racist as fuck. They loved that traitorous flag and pined for the days when you could own another human being. Let them secede. Good luck you sorry ass moochers!
ReplyDeleteIn the Caribbean they use "gwine" in exactly the way you describe is done in Gullah. People might add the "to" if they are talking a little bit uptown. But the pronunciation will stay the same. Of course it's the same family of Creole language, and at the beginning there was probably a lot more cultural similarity along that whole Atlantic region from the Carolinas to the Caribbean.
ReplyDeleteOne thing we don't have in the Caribbean that, you hear in the South (including DC) is "fixin' to" pronounced "finna."
And then fried chicken in the clubhouse afterward.
ReplyDeleteIf it helps, as someone who can switch between southern and standard English as the need arises, I'd say for me 'goin' comes out as 'gohn,' emphasis on the 'g' the 'n' almost completely silent.
ReplyDeletePS: here in Georgia we also have "fin to".
ReplyDeleteI swear, I'll never get the whole fried-chick'n 'n watermelon thing. Two of the most favoritest foods in the entire country, hard up against pizza and ice cream, regardless of race, creed, national origin, or IQ. "When I die, I's gwine up to the great ribbaboat in the sky, and I's gwine have chick'n 'n woadymellin, ebery day!"

ReplyDeleteRoy, I hope for your sake there was a microphone in the room when you composed this masterpiece just so you could drop it on the floor as you hit the publish button.
ReplyDeletePertinent.
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/0OWg5ymecm8?t=25s
Roy's rendition would be funny, but it's too close to the reality of racism in America for me to crack a smile. There are way too many White men in prominent and powerful positions who actually feel the way Dogwhistle does. Why do you think every Republican asked about this has risked spinal injury to avoid saying it was a racist attack? It's not because they're too fucking stupid to see it--it's because they know that admitting it was will put them crosswise with their base, their donors, and most of the South.
ReplyDeleteRacism is very much alive and well. There are huge swaths of the South that would go back to owning other humans if only we would let them. And let's not fool ourselves: There's a pretty big portion of the Northern population that's racist as well. You don't have to wear the trappings of Dogwhistle to be just as racist to the core as he is.
Supposedly, the kid bought the gun himself with money his father gave him for his birthday. At one point, his father took the gun away because the kid had done something fucked up, though what that was has not been revealed.
ReplyDeleteSaw a very short interview with the kid's best friend from childhood--the friend is Black and said that Roof was most definitely not a racist growing up, and that Roof's parents are most definitely not racist.
There's an idiotic Southern apologist historian the Roanoke, VA NPR station gave a regular segment to after the Ken Burns series.
ReplyDeleteHere's what Roy's neoconfederate sounds like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8coNTlxCH6w
He's got that Southern Fakeistocracy lisp. You ought to hear him talk about Lee's horses Widdle Sowell and Twava-wah.
That's the flag the Republicans would have waved in front of Hitler. Their battle flag is the Dixie Swastika.
ReplyDeleteThere are huge swaths of the South that would go back to owning other humans if only we would let them
ReplyDeleteIt was still happening recently. When my wife and I bought our first house in Oxford, NC, our neighbor farmed tobacco with people he held in debt. He gradually let go of them as it became cheaper to hire immigrant labor. He once told us point blank "Niggers ain't humans."
He slowly rotted to death of Alzheimers, which was only fair. But his racist sprog still live.
You can even tell from the structure of current farming operations which models they would have employed. If you want to get a snapshot of the mindset of the planters, all you have to do is drive to southside VA or north central NC and talk to the fat guy in the Izod shirt who's sitting in the truck watching someone else work. If you want a snapshot of the secessionist legislatures you needn't look any farther than the Republican House.
I hope Roof is smart enough to figure out what he's done, and have every waking moment of his life be a fresh revelation of the horrific waste he's created of himself, and the wake of misery he's left.
ReplyDeleteHe's just another dumbass piece of white trash clay.
Instead of calling for his death we ought to ask Fox News, the CCC, and the Republicans to give us seven "Burghers of Calais", complete with ropes around their fucking necks. This was terrorism, and they whipped it up.
And quite a few righties are proudly proclaiming that the Civil War had zip to do with slavery . . .
ReplyDeleteWhich is of a piece with the Right's growing commitment to disdaining evidence before their very own eyes.
"Look, I know that the proclamation of secession explicitly stated that the Civil War was about slavery. And I can read all the contemporaneous accounts of the people actively involved in planning and executing secession and the Civil War--accounts that explicitly state that the whole thing was about slavery. And, sure, we have 150 years of historians all noting that it was about slavery. But, goddamnit, that isn't what I want to believe. Therefore, it cannot possibly have been about slavery!"
A reglar Jew-dah P. Benjamin!
ReplyDeleteYes, it has been interesting to see people who loudly declare they totally aren't racist (because racists are horrible people) refuse to admit that Mr. Storm Front Door is racist because ... he is a horrible person.
ReplyDeleteAt long last they have a chance to reset the bar for racism so high that all but a tiny portion of whites could pass under it, but they can't do it because that would mean admitting a specific white person is bad. Much better to stick to the more nebulous Klan Member.
"It was about states' rights!"
ReplyDelete"Yes, the states' rights to sanction slavery."
"... No, the other states' rights! I can't talk right now. I have to uh ... [runs away]."
"Heah now Goldbug. You the one what knows the money. Stuff this bullion in your britches and git us all a steamship for Rio. Stevens heah will bring the bug juice."
ReplyDeleteAlthough I suspect that ol' Foghorn's reaction to Charleston might be more along these lines:
ReplyDeleteIn Alabama it's "Fi-inah." (Fixing to = About to.)
ReplyDeleteI don't know how much weight to give this, but I've heard an old dialect coach saying that a lot of the coastal Southern dialect is an Elizabethan holdover.
ReplyDeleteI suspect it's just another attempt to give some white trash a cultural patina it don't really have.
I always cringe when I see/hear/read guys like this. They try to produce this romanticized version of the genteel way of life that was the antebellum South. Look at any of the original source documents available (and there are warehouses filled with them) on the "Southern Way of Life" and you come away horrified. Even if you just confine your efforts to the absolute upper-most crusts of society, you find men who were mean, vicious, petty, small-minded, and tended toward violence at the slightest provocation--even against those they notionally loved like their wives and children.
ReplyDeleteHistorian? Fuck you with Victor Davis Colitis Hanson's rusty chainsaw.
Fox News is essentially broadcasting a "cut down the tall trees" directive every day. Every country is different, each national assortment of ethnicities is unique, and I don't anticipate a Rwandan type genocide here. But you keep broadcasting "cut down the tall trees" and shit will happen.
ReplyDeleteI had friend in college whose mom was from a middling southern "aristocratic" family in Wilmington, and she probably had been coached in that voice, and carried it all the way through getting her art degree at UNCG. She even took a class or two with Randall Jarrell.
ReplyDeleteMore than one time she responded to something I said with "Why that's just VUL-GAH!"
It's amazing how much entire words and phrases can be shortened in our dialect.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite example of this is the single syllable "mo," which can be used as a substitute for the phrase "am going to." Example: "I'mo walk down to the lake."
Lindsey Graham speaks this way too.
ReplyDeleteThat's right; it does.
ReplyDeleteWell crack me over and white my trash!
ReplyDeleteYes, every Republican has avoided saying it was a racist attack, but I was especially taken with the comments of Jeb Bush.
ReplyDeleteAfter all Jeb is supposedly the "moderate" one. He's the favorite candidate of the Republican establishment. When he wrote “I don't know what was on the mind or the heart of the man who committed these atrocious crimes,” he was surely lying.
They also use the same foundation. "Gentleman Caller"
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't care if Graham decided to go around looking like Caitlyn Jenner as she appeared on the Vanity Fair cover. That doesn't bother me in the slightest.
ReplyDeleteBut that Fakeistocracy (great word, by the way) accent makes my skin crawl.
The South is a very pretty place -- dogwood trees, wild roses, lots of green.
ReplyDeleteIt's also dirt fucking cheap. Why ain't some a you yankee librul's* move here and shake it up?
*We already got plenty of the yankee racists thank you so goddamn much.
Derelict pointed out downthread that every Republican asked about the shooting in Charleston has avoided calling it a racist attack. It’s true. Much of the Rightwing media has tried to spin the attack as an attack on Christianity or religion itself.
ReplyDeleteThat disgusts me of course, but you know who else it would disgust? That little mass murderer they’ve got locked up in SC. He took a lot of effort to describe exactly what his motivations were, and he told his victims exactly why he was committing his atrocities. It's apparently very important to him that people know why he was doing what he was doing.
I hope that he hears people like Jeb Bush saying "I don't know what was on his mind," and the Rightwing media saying "No one knows why he did this." I hope he hears Rick Santorum twist his motivation around like he's doing.
The little monster would probably be terribly frustrated to hear this kind of reporting. I can imagine him pounding his little fists and shouting "No, no, no! That's not what I meant at all!"
No, that sounds about right. I read somewhere (might have been Paul Theroux) about a tribe of native Panamanians that as late as the 1980s were still saying "gazooks" which was an Elizabethan curse that they kept alive there somehow. Of course when people say "Elizabethan" you're supposed to think "Shakespeare" but Shakespeare wasn't the type of person that was getting out to populate these territories. A lot of them would have been the Jacobean and Restoration equivalent of "people that hang out in front of the 7-11 all day." And also religious nuts. The underclass, basically, where dialects and accents tend to change a lot less.
ReplyDelete♫ I'm just a soul whose racism is good
ReplyDeleteOh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood...♫
Bless you, Meanie; you actually made me smile for the first time in a long time.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know where he was headed when he was caught.
ReplyDeleteYeah, if it had really been about states' rights, they would have never supported the Fugitive Slave Act, which completely overran the laws of non-slave states in deference to those of slave states. "I'm totally for the states making their own decisions, except for THOSE GUYS!"
ReplyDeleteThis has been another episode of Children of the Corndog. Tune in again next week!
ReplyDeleteAs you note, 'twas ever thus with these hoseheads. Still is: Republican-led southern states refuse to set up exchanges or expand Medicaid, but demand the funding increases they would be entitled to if they actually did those things while also demanding that the states that did set up exchanges and expand Medicaid be deprived of their funding increases.
ReplyDeleteHaving been a Yankee librul in the South, I think that "shaking things up" is all too likely to end up with some son of the South waving his Second Amendment Penis Extension in my face.
ReplyDeleteWhen they want to defend slavery and discrimination against Blacks, they use the phrase "States' Rights."
ReplyDeleteWhen they want to defend discrimination against Gays, they use the phrase "Religious Liberty." They always have to have some kind of fig leaf to cover their true intentions.
That's the difference between the Left and the Right. I'm a Leftist. As such, I can come right out and say that I believe that everyone should have equal justice under law. I can come right out and say that no one deserves to suffer because of their circumstances of birth. I can say that we all should have the right to breath clean air and drink clean water, and that no one should profit financially from human suffering.
People on the Right are not so free. They can't come right out with what they want to say. They always have to disguise it.
Or maybe hear Rick Perry calling what he did "an accident."
ReplyDeleteWe haven't seen an "accident" like this since Salvador Allende managed to shoot himself in the head 47 times, pausing twice to reload.
Honestly, I think it's something we're going to have to do ourselves.
ReplyDeleteMay take awhile.
That would account for the Harker's island "hoi toiders".
ReplyDeleteAlso contemporary "Oiks."
Some of the Virginia/North Carolina constructions are frankly unsettling. The first time I heard "Come on go with me home" I thought I was being propositioned by an elderly woman.
ReplyDeleteMy Alabama relatives will say "y'all come home with us" as they're walking out the door, so I guess that's pretty widespread.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few safe havens. Durham, Chapel Hill Raleigh, Asheville.
ReplyDeleteOutside those, however, you'd think ol po' white has completely forgotten how much the planters dicked him up the ass.
And that's exactly what it means. "We're going now."
ReplyDeleteThat's why historians tend to focus on the 1861-65 war years and emphasize troop movements, battles, and the general's battle strategies. The really interesting and damning part of the history of the South is the part from 1789 up TO 1861, which should include the full-throated defenses of slavery by Southern politicians, and the craven compromises made by Northern politicians in what turned out to be a futile attempt to preserve the union. Also too... I'm surprised that, in the spirit of "Southern Tradition", Councilman Dogwhistle didn't borrow Sen. Preston Brooks' cane and give that uppity Rev. Walter Hudson and the moderator the beatings they so richly deserved.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that Nikki Haley has been the one braying for Roof's blood, while the members of Mother Emmanuel's congregation have been calling for mercy and forgiveness.
ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons the right wants their agent dead. Not the least of which is to shut him up.
ReplyDeleteDead Timothy McVeigh doesn't embarrass his handlers, or telegraph their intentions.
Flinging the keyboard over your shoulder just doesn't have the same, I dunno, je ne c'est quoi, or something.
ReplyDeleteCornered animal time yet?
ReplyDeleteClosing in on it! And racing to a corner near you.
...
you'd think ol po' white has completely forgotten how much the planters dicked him up the ass.
ReplyDeleteI could never decide whether it was that po' White had forgotten all the buggery he was subjected to, or if po' White didn't mind the buggery as long as he knew he could look down upon (and shit upon) Blacks. The old "If I ain't better than a n*****r, life ain't worth livin'."

I'm looking across at James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom on my bookshelf. Invaluable on this.
Oh, I do believe Our Mr Pierce id gonna have something to say about that tomorrow, that'll draw blood. Wonder if van Dickhead is in danger of no longer being "My man Chuck"...
ReplyDeleteHe (and other un-indicted co-conspirators) wants a race war.
ReplyDeleteNot coincidentally, my wife is convinced that since they can't kill the HNIC in the White House that they'll try to kill as many of the rest of us as they can. And I have to admit I wasn't fully on board with her until the Secret Service started screwing up.
I'd LIKE to say that's stunning and unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteBut it isn't.
African Americans know better than anyone that the conservatives/Fox WANT to start a race war, that the Right LOVES riots.
ReplyDeleteJeez look at their (conservatard's) talk and behavior during Katrina... they were slobbering and salivating for all the USA's Black population to riot. Same thing after the murder in Ferguson, NYC and on-and-on.
A nice, juicy Race War is what Repugs and their racist owners (Kocks etc) are trying to instigate. A great way to distract the rubes from economic, social and ecological problems deliberately caused by Repugs.
As will Driftglass, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI posted at Raw Story that Chuck feels he needs to be "edgy" because John McCain told him Boat Boy Luke Russert was getting his job. //snark
"Finna" is the cousin of "Imma".
ReplyDeleteI don't think they consider it a way to distract from the GOP agenda or the Koch's Bircherite plans for the country. Rather, their fervent wish for race riots is based on the notion that the riots provide justification for treating Black people as sub-human. Just listen to the narrative every time Black people revolt against the constant injustice they suffer--"Look at those savages! Why, they act like animals!"
ReplyDeleteAnd you can't talk to animals, can you?
Yep, outside of a few cities, it's cracker-ass cracker all the way down. There's a reason why all those crazy fuckers keep getting elected to congress.
ReplyDeleteChildren of the Corndog
ReplyDeleteUn-Fucking-Believable! It is simply not possible that he could be that tone-deaf in approving and then airing that. The only conclusion that fits the facts is that Chuckie Boy is a stone racist who pushed this as far as he thought it could appearing on air wearing a bedsheet.
ReplyDeleteIf there is any justice in this world, Chuck Todd will be handing out resumes at Burger Kings before the week is out.
I agree with all that you say except that I thought Roy's piece was very funny. Just like I thought Lenny Bruce on these topics was funny (and still is, and every bit as germane, sadly). As an old fart, I can attest that things were a lot worse back then, believe me, so you take your laughs where you can get them, especially when they are so on incisively on target.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, of course. It's just that this bit of racial violence makes me despair of my country and my countrymen even more than usual. In particular, the complete inability of anyone on the Right to admit this was racially motivated, and the complete inability of anyone in our media to call these racist assholes out for, well, being racist assholes.
ReplyDeleteHe could be the communications director for the CCC. He could be blowing truck drivers at a glory hole on I-95 outside of Petersburg, But he's got no business on a news program, unless it's "Chuck Todd gets ass beat down."
ReplyDeleteDyslexia is a wonderful thing--when I first read this comment, I thought the last part in quotes read "Chuck Todd eats ass clown."
ReplyDeleteOh, so he's already working for Rupert?
ReplyDelete"The difficult I'll do right now.The impossible will take a little while"
ReplyDeleteThat's my motto!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine from Oklahoma told me one of his aunts remembers two older ladies in her youth refer to a young girl as a 'right fair young maid'. This would've been in the 1930s or so.
ReplyDelete"You gonna finish that?"
ReplyDeleteAfrican Americans know better than anyone that the conservatives/Fox WANT to start a race war, that the Right LOVES riots.
ReplyDeleteYes. They see that as a guaranteed way to political and cultural dominance as well as a return to the good old days when being born white was an immediate achievement like none other you could attain in your lifetime.
Castillian Spanish replaces the z with the th which replicates the lisp of the Haspburg monarchs due to the infamous enlarged lower lip that ran in the family.
ReplyDeleteFrom Todd's perspective things look a little out of balance, what with Black folks getting shot in the news all the time...
ReplyDeleteSo what else can he do? He's got to put his thumb on the scales... just to balance things out a little bit.
Mitt Romney does NOT look like he's enjoying that peasant food.
ReplyDeleteAin't that the truth!
ReplyDeletePenis extension - could he have made that any more obvious?
ReplyDeleteI dunno. I can't see how it would be good for business.
ReplyDeleteThe kid and everyone else would have been better off if he'd invested in a Fleshlight instead.
ReplyDeleteHow about:
ReplyDelete"How's your mama 'n' 'em?"
"I might could do that."
"I might oughta do that."
"The child was tuning up to cry."
"Y'all done et?"
I'll just leave this here.https://youtu.be/W8YAK8oMEKI
ReplyDelete'Cept they wanted a Federal government that would return escaped slaves from the North to the South.
ReplyDeleteA Federal Army that would slaughter the natives so slavery could be extended into the West.
Sorta limited limitations, maybe?
-dlj.
I think I got some bad news for him: don't they have black folks in American jails?
ReplyDelete-dlj.

comfort food for polite racists
ReplyDeleteI am so stealing this.
Somebody on these here internets talks about "stochastic terrorism" by which they mean the agitation and propagandistic seduction of weak minded individuals who "spontaneously" and "individually" carry out the terroristic demands of their masters. So, sure, Sarah Palin didnt order any particular guy to shoot any particular person but human nature being what it is if enough people shout fire in a crowded room enough times someone is hoing to get crushed in the resulting stampede.
ReplyDeleteThe cry "but think of the children" has literally become "but think of the poor parents."
ReplyDeleteIf only someone else had shot him while he was reloading!
ReplyDeleteSherman had the right idea, but no follow-through.
ReplyDeleteMy comment would like some other comment to take it out back and put it out of its misery. My comment doesnt want to live in a world where chuck todd isnt cleaning toilets with his tongue.
ReplyDeletePone mah corn? Isnt that gaelic for "up yours?"
ReplyDeleteStates' rights to have their rights enforced at the expense of other states and the federal government and black people..!"
ReplyDeleteSome of them, anyway. There's been a lot of focus on that by the press because it's a lot more comforting.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that was excessively disgusting. And he was addressing family of the victims. But I was pleasantly surprised at the speed with the SC SC yanked him off that case.
ReplyDeleteHey oh! My daughter and i just watched measure for measure at the Globe Theater in london. They have been exploring originsl pronouncistion--this production wasnt in OP but if you google old pronouncistion and shakespeare and you tube you will get great short clips of it. Also albion's seed has quite a bit on this topic--the short version of which is that each of the five different dialects of the US reflect the regional styles of the different parts of england that formed the bulk of the earliest settlers.
ReplyDeleteHave you read his response to the criticism of the show? Like Chuck, it's completely without substance. There's no indication that he thinks the timing was improper, or the material was in fact racist. He defends the piece as challenging assumptions, when in fact it's obvious he's just licking Republican ass again.
ReplyDeleteI've already said this , but he needs to be punched repeatedly in the face until he's on the goddamn floor.
We've gotten a lot of feedback about the gun video we showed on Meet the Press today. Some were upset it only featured African-American men talking about their regrets of pulling a trigger. All of the men in the piece volunteered to be a part of the video and the larger project it is a part of.
But the last thing we wanted was to cloud the discussion of the topic.
The original decision to air this segment was made before Wednesday's massacre. However, the staff and I had an internal debate about whether to show it at all this week. When we discussed putting it off, that conversation centered around race and perception - not the conversation we wanted the segment to invoke.
We decided against delaying the segment because we wanted to show multiple sides of what gun violence does in this country. We thought the issue of gun violence in our culture and society was an important conversation to continue -- too important to put off for another week. The consequences of gun violence should not be hidden.
As I say to all audiences, Meet the Press should make all viewers uncomfortable at some point or we are not doing our job. I hope folks view the gun video as a part of the conversation we should all be having and not the totality of it.
That's a good phrase. Especially because this country is overrun with stochastic motherfuckers.
ReplyDeleteAt this point it's like one of those old Coleco electric football games, You set up the players, cut it on, and watch them dance. After three or four hours of this, one of them might vibrate into one end zone or another...
Where was I?
"A Streetcar Named Lindsey."
ReplyDeleteLBJ articulated it best:
ReplyDelete"If you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than
the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell,
give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll even empty his pockets for
you.”
And racing to "The Corner" as well.

ReplyDelete"After I'm elected President, I'm gonna have Bain buy every single factory that makes these fucking crimes against taste, and take 'em apart and ship them all to China. And the boats are gonna sink halfway there. Fucking Iowa."
ReplyDeleteOK, not van Dyke, goatee.
ReplyDeleteIn Chuck's case, more like goatsee.
as long as he knew he could look down upon (and shit upon) Blacks
ReplyDeleteThis. Also known as "Last Place Aversion."
I LOL'ed over this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNow, now, Chuck Todd would dirty toilets with his tongue.
ReplyDeleteHe defends the piece as challenging assumptions
ReplyDeleteChallenging assumptions by repeating one of this nation's congenital calumnies?
He's always doing the Republican contrarianism bit.
ReplyDeleteThe talking heads shows seem to employ the same hiring practices as police departments. Ineducable? Stupid?
Welcome aboard.
And they certainly don't want him coming to his senses and repudiating their dangerous gibberish from his prison cell.
ReplyDeleteBetter for them that, like McVeigh, he remains eternally a warning to the left, and a pathetic martyr for the right.
.
Yes, he was entirely too soft-hearted, which is partly why I love him. I think even he would be surprised to see that they still haven't learned the lesson he was trying to teach them.
ReplyDeleteHe's got my vote!
ReplyDeleteHe's either lying or unqualified to live on his own, much less be president.
ReplyDeleteMitt has at least come out against flying the Confederate flag. While he's still a first class corporate bloodsucker, at least he doesn't have to tapdance for these assholes now that he's not running.
ReplyDeleteSorry, hit the wrong button.
ReplyDeleteSeveral of those are common among rural Hoosiers, mostly downstate.
ReplyDeleteI was told by an Iraqi acquaintance that "muezzin" was sometimes pronounced "muethin"
ReplyDeleteBet he'd pass a polygraph, tho...
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't care if Graham decided to go around looking like Caitlyn Jenner as she appeared on the Vanity Fair cover.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if rival campaigns have started putting out wink-wink-nudge-nudge fliers about Huckleberry's sexuality yet. Politics ain't beanbag and all that.
In this case I think it's more like putting his dumb on the scales.
ReplyDeleteOf course, Sullivan and Cromwell, assorted enemies of the Vanderbilts (who wanted to preserve their shipping route through Nicaragua), a woodpile full of corrupt Senators and Congressmen, not to mention Roosevelt's use of the Marines, military intimidation, and a payoff by Roosevelt to corrupt members of the Panamanian liberation movement had nothing to do with it, nor did the fierce determination of the U.S. to keep the Canal Zone in American hands.
ReplyDeleteTrolling, indeed.
I'm surprised none have tried it claiming it is part of their religion under the same laws that are letting pharmacists refuse to fill BC prescriptions, or bakeries serve gay cakes etc.
ReplyDeleteHe should not get the death penalty - he should be shipped off to Gitmo and get the full treatment. Saving that he should get life, without parole, serve it in total solitary confinement and never be allowed to speak to a human again , or rather no human be allowed, including his guards, to speak to him again. No visitors and no seeing other prisoners.
ReplyDeleteDamn those liebral gun control ;laws anyway!
ReplyDeleteNBC really needs to chuck Todd.
ReplyDeleteWell he can't put his dick on the scales - it wouldn't register any difference
ReplyDeleteIf'n I kud sumways convine this comment betwine the bleachers...baldnblah could makin sum fin musee batch thern.
ReplyDelete...
Todd is doing his part to reinforce the old adage that a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged. Hey, America, here are the guys who mugged you!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised his response didn't include the line, "gee, sorry, we couldn't find enough white guys using guns in crime. Maybe there aren't any."
Well, one alleged, for pretty sure: a guy named Roof.
One, for damned sure: Whitey Bulger.
Another, for damned sure. Scott Roeder.
Several hundred mafia foot soldiers.
Oh, sorry, my mistake. Todd was looking for people who regretted using guns in crimes.
I'll just leave this here ...
ReplyDeleteWhats your problem B4? Next week they are convening a roundtable discussion for jews who have regretted killing gentile babies to bake their blood into matzoh? They are calling it "Jews You Can Use" and the week after it will be an in depth look at the sorrows of the opium dealing white slavers who run the chinese laundromats in San Francisco. It is tentatively entitled "A Chink in our Armour?"
ReplyDeleteCall me weak-kneed, but I still get a little queasy when I see someone advocating torture for any reason.
ReplyDeleteThat's je ne sais quoi. Zut alors, motherfucker!
ReplyDeleteI regret that...only one upvote available, however, I am very inclined to whisper dirty nothings, softly, into the ear of this comment .

If string theory holds out, there is not a universe in which his dick would tip any scales, save for the one in which the foreskin closes over his shoulders...but then we are into angels dancing on a pin territory in a universe that eschews gravity...
