CONSERVATIVE (AND LIBERTARIAN) OUTREACH TO WOMEN IS GOING GREAT, CONT.

Last week I mentioned the  spate of  conservative complaints about Emma Watson's very measured feminist speech at the U.N., which apparently spoiled their bedtime Hermione fantasies. Since then, in Time magazine -- a major outlet of what was once called the Liberal Media, for reasons lost to history -- Cathy Young of Reason has delivered the libertarian response. Guess how that goes?
Sorry, Emma Watson, but HeForShe Is Rotten for Men
Until feminism recognizes discrimination against men, the movement for gender equality will be incomplete.
Lots of weeping about "anti-male biases in the court system," and how if a woman beats up a man (as they frequently do) no one sympathizes, whereas if a guy beats up a chick everyone gets bent out of shape, etc. This pretty much comports with what libertarians usually say about women's rights. I wouldn't be surprised if folks started catching on at last that social issues don't mean as much to libertarians as the transfer of wealth from paupers to the deserving rich.

While his colleagues were raging at Watson, Kevin D. Williamson of National Review kicked it old school with a rant about Lena Dunham. the Brooklyn actress who started driving culture warriors crazy during the 2012 campaign, and whom, despite their protestations of disgust with her tattooed ass, they just cain't quit.

Dunham wrote a pamphlet for Planned Parenthood (or, in Williamson’s view, “a gang of abortion profiteers”) called “5 Reasons Why I Vote (and You Should, Too),” spurring his column-length sputter. Mostly it was about  how voting is stupid (“the most shallow gesture of citizenship there is”) because people with whom he disagrees get to do it (and are only doing so “as an act of self-gratification,” not to get candidates elected) and seem at present to outnumber him and his lunatic fringe. But Williamson managed to stuff unchivalrous comments about Dunham in there, too, and plenty of abortion ravings, including an assertion that women have abortions out of a “desire to fit nicely into a prom dress."  "FWIW, I've been dumping of democracy/voting fetishization for almost two decades," cheered Jonah Goldberg in response.

Later Williamson went on Twitter to tell people that women who had abortions should be hanged as murderers. The boy will go far.

Our favorite stray ladyragebit, though, is a line from Bryan Preston at PJ Media. Angered to learn that Alicia Keys was appearing naked for some social justice thing, Preston seethed, “She and the [New York] Times see this as ‘empowering.’ Is it empowering that an insanely successful woman and mother believes that getting naked before the entire world is the best way to draw attention to her cause? Or is it just plain old attention-whoring from her, and sucking up to leftwing celebrities from the New York Times?” Fucking bitches, with their whoring and sucking!

“Yet here she is,” sneered Preston, “being all empowered. Naked, to push for gun control.” And now, his piece de resistance:
Try confronting an Islamist madman like this.
Message discipline is message discipline -- squads of headchoppers roam America's streets! Even in the midst of ladyrage, there's always time to pick on Muslims.

Once again showing how it is the Right that truly and deeply loves America--but despises its government, its form of governance, and the people who live here. And, for good measure, the Right's support of polluters says that they also despise the very land itself.

But otherwise, they do love America!

For Goldberg, this is democracy/voting fetishization: Every citizen should have the right to vote, and should exercise it.

At the same time, he thinks the vote is a precious, solemn thing, and voters should be limited to the certifiably "informed" to make it even more "valuable" -- but this is the opposite of fetishizing voting, because (WARNING: actual Goldberg quotes)
It's an unfashionable thing to say, but if anything, voting should be harder, not easier.
Immigrants have to pass a test to vote; why not all citizens?
If you want people to value their vote, we should make it more valuable. We might get fewer voters, but the voters would be far more likely to appreciate the solemnity of their ballots.
If you threaten to take the vote away from the certifiably uninformed, voter turnout will almost certainly get a boost.

(Yes, he did say that this would result in both fewer voters and increased turnout, but to be fair, that's because 1) these quotes are from two different articles and 2) Goldberg.)

Of course the Pantload and Williamson think that voting is useless and pathetic. Those stupid citizens should just get sinecures at propaganda magazines like decent people.

It reminds you how pathetic and juvenile these guys are. I associate the voting-is-for-l00zers attitude with 19-year-olds who watched Fight Club too many times, not grown men who are theoretically supposed to be intelligent and incisive political commentators.

Most people--left, right, and in-between, do not grasp what a big deal the concept of democracy is, the idea that even the most downtrodden person having a right to make their voice heard. The vast majority of humans who ever lived never got to do that. For them it's just another thing to bitch about when they realize life isn't a mechanism for them to order everyone else around.

If I understand Williamson's "argument" correctly, it's that voting sucks because people who publicly support it are a bunch of smarmy hipsters that he really wants to hatefuck, and you should too. This from the country's preeminent conservative news magazine.

I'm really annoyed by that Cathy Young article.

I'm starting to get really tired of what I'll call "false partisanship". Real partisanship is when you disagree with somebody on substance; when you refuse to agree with what they're saying because it violates some principle you hold.

"False partisanship" is the kind where you ignore what the other person is saying and disagree with them simply because they're on the other team.

Let's put aside, for a moment, the fact that Young really misrepresents the arguments of a lot of the feminists she links to, I want to know why the hell this article is about Watson's speech. What, in anything Watson said, makes Young think Watson doesn't care about male domestic abuse victims? Or would praise a shirt saying "I bathe in male tears"?

There's not a god-damned word in Watson's speech that suggests she wouldn't care about those things.

So why is this article a response to Watson? Because Watson is a Hollywood star and feminist, so she must be on the "left-wing" team, and Young is a writer for Reason magazine, which means she must be on the "right-wing" team, and so that must mean they disagree, no matter what they actually say or think!

The deepest gesture of citizenship is obviously being a Walton heir and giving a sack of money to National Review so they can piss and moan about the horrible unfairness of the estate tax. How dare the government try to rob one of money that their grandfather earned?

Whatever makes you think that Cathy Young is engaged in (or indeed has any interest in) honest debate? She is writing for Reason magazine, which means the audience that she must please is pretty much only interested in the snide dismissal of the leftists that live in their heads. While it is designed to resemble a policy debate, it actually has nothing in common with one. No compromises are offered or solutions advanced. It's the printed equivalent of giving that awkward kid in gym class a swirly, complete with sneering about how it's his fault they had to do it.

It's not supposed to be funny. It's supposed to give you that fleeting high of social status and domination; to see another human brought low while you look down upon them. Few things taste sweeter than having your (relatively) higher position in the social hierarchy affirmed by watching someone else false and WRT America's social hierarchy there's nothing that does this quite like seeing (another) male dominated by a women.

Except that your hard-core Fight Club fans want to not just detach from, but entirely destroy the system, whereas Pantload, Williamson et al. really just want someone who's friendlier to the rentier class. They'd appreciate the Durdenites only if they pissed exclusively in the lobster bisque of limousine liberals (extra bonus if they could embarrass Obama with his inability to magically make the black-clad hordes go away).

Which would suggest that it's up to (Bear with me here, because this is radical) the Braley campaign to finally start pointing out Ernst's pyschopathic teabaggery about Agenda 21, impeaching Obama the dictator, opposing the evil farm bill, loving the Kochs so much, etc, etc, etc. Maybe once Senator Ernst is elected, Braley can get together for drinks with waste-of-carbon Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ed Fitzgerald.

These guys have bedtime Hermione fantasies? Hermione is plain and has bushy hair. Wouldn't Fleur Delacour be more their speed? Fleur Delacour sounds like she could get a job as a Faux News journaliste. You can imagine Fleur telling you all about the perils of Obamacare and about how Barry used to deliver Alinsky's groceries, but Hermione (meantime) would want to talk about runes. To the guys who are doing the complaining, runes are what a north of England girl gets in her stockings, if they're willing to think about it even that much, which is not guaranteed.

Some things are cultural and not universal, after all. Not everybody has Hermione fantasies.
