NEW VOICE COLUMN UP...

...about how, as the seasons change, so must the news cycles, as the rightbloggers' all-scandal programming is interrupted by events relating to women, minorities, and other things conservatives just don't handle very well.

Before, or after, Captain Schettino strands them on the rocks?

Don't go around thinking the right has a problem with rape. They don't. What is offending them is the presumption of the potential victims to complain about it, instead of finding a nice Republican man with a concealed-carry permit to escort her everywhere after dark. His time can easily be compensated for with daily oral sex.

Wimmins is the sex class, you see: fucking is what they're for. One way or another. Aren't you glad the conservatives are so honest?

  3. Charles wedged his wrinkled Krauthammer into the quivering folds of K-Los secret garden. She moaned "Oh, Jesus, take me now!".. Wanna read more?

Linky? I'd be very interested as (about a thousand years ago) I used to date one of the more notoriously rightwing sf authors. Every time I see a review of one of his books I think to myself, "Thank God I dumped him." (And if he thinks he dumped me, that's fine -- Thank God he dumped me!)

  10. She will knock your socks and all other garments off.

Possibly literally, in the case of Sarah Manning.

  11. Seriously, Maslany is like a wonder to behold. I haven't seen acting like that since Pembleton had suspects in the box.

I guess to me it just came off as more of a thoughtless inability to think of what the antebellum south actually meant to black Americans.

Or possibly she just does not give a shit. I've been getting more and more irritated at this "oh, she's just an old Southern white lady, she's from another time" excuse - which I'm not saying you're making; I'm just using this as an excuse to go off on a rant - and I'm fucking sick of it. I don't give a damn how old you are nor how Southern you are, it's 2013, you've had enough time to realize that the rest of the non-jackass world thinks that sort of behavior and that kind of outlook is distasteful and douche-worthy.

She was treating her African-American employees like shit, this is documented. The woman who helped her develop most of her recipes (as a pro cook, I can only assume Deen's contributions amounted to "add a fuck-ton of butter and powdered sugar) less than $10 an hour for over a decade. The reason she fucks over her staff is directly connected to her fondness for antebellum and Jim Crow times, and the stampede of tasteless crackers rushing to defend her against the "PC police" or whateverthefuck is why that sort of shit perpetuates.

And really, what is Deen going to suffer here. She lost her Food Network contract, but I'm sure CMT or someone like that will snatch her up posthaste. There's enough bland, flavorless honkies in this world to continue stuffing that restaurant of hers to gobble down that crap she calls "Southern cooking". White folks are wallowing in some primo racism these days, the likes of which we haven't seen since the '60s, and Deen's core audience won't shrink one whit, mostly because they don't think it's a big deal what she said, either.

A lot of white folks think the n-bomb (in any context, but especially if uttered by a black person) is the end all and be all of racism. It's just the surface ripples. Racism is a rich white woman being a total shit to her black employees yet other white people think it's horrific she's being so publicly shamed. Fuck Paula Deen and fuck anyone that's defending her.

I've never heard that they're "personal friends", but in the past I've seen positive comments about Reynolds from one or two of the bloggers at Boing Boing, who get a little uncomfortable when people point out the dissonance there. (Ditto for James Lileks, who usually gets the defense "but if you ignore his politics...", as if.)

I can still enjoy Lileks' goofy pop-cult stuff. He's very good at it. But what does Reynolds even do besides tendentious bullshit?

Not to mention the slur against a wholesome and nutritious type of grain food.

Post-singularity, reality will have a fast-forward button, which will make Reynolds a lot more palatable.

    Probably Helen's opinion as well.

thanks for the links; I read a bunch and am glad I'm not having to deal with that shit. It absolutely amazes me that writers speculating about the human future think we'd all be better off going back to primitive racism and clonk-a-woman-and-drag-her-back-to-your-cave attitudes.

I agree with all of that, Matt. I felt like the stories I read about this trial buried the lede by focusing more on those surface ripples than on the ugliness underneath.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, no doubt. It's easier than actually addressing the real problem. The lady who said the evil word is properly shamed in public, though she suffers no real loss, and white people can go on pretending that racism is a thing of the past. It's win-win for everyone who matters.

no kidding!! then again sfwa has had actual honest to ctthulu luddites, boasting of their rejection of modern tech, as officers, in the past, remember the ebook drm fiasco and the pixelstained technopeasant horde thing? so ma be the social reactionary crap goes with it....
