A HANDUP NOT A HANDOUT.

John Williams, the hardworking graphic artist... ok, stop right there, graphic artists do work hard; maybe not in the big agencies where they play beer pong for a hour and a half and then make a squiggle, but in John's world the dollars are hard. Anyway, the hardworking graphic artist who did the cover of my lurid novel hasn't been having the best time of it economically, and losing a bread-and-butter freelance gig to the caprices of corporate scumbaggery hasn't made it any better. What say you click this link and send him some scratch?

Thanks in advance for being such angels.

I have worked as an IT tech in an ad agency and the creative's not only bust their asses, but are in general poorly compensated. If my net worth was not at this point measured in dimes I would be all over this like a wool blanket.

  5. Erk, I know how he feels. I'm close to this situation here in Australia.

The company that runs yellow pages here is off-shoring over 300 of its jobs, including the design departments despite they earned over au$600 million profit last year (our parent company earned over au$1.6 billion profit in its half year result). It's another example of off-shoring work not because of skill shortages, or the current quality of work, but simply there is someone is willing to do it for less.

Well, you know, this is a deeply moving gesture on Roy's part and my wife and I are greatly appreciative of those who have supplied us with a bit of cash and a kind word, or both. You will all receive personal thank-yous.

We're in quite a jam, compounded as Roy says by a stupefyingly dishonest charade on the part of one of my clients. I am not damaged by his actions (beyond loss of income) so much as I am astounded at the lengths he went to so he could fuck me over. Don't people have families or hobbies?

Anyway. Not important. What is important is that my wife, who is one of the world's loveliest and kindest creatures and probably one of its last remaining true innocents, may not have to pack us up for a post-eviction move. We're not quite there yet, but we have hope. In the meantime, I am a man who likes to earn his keep. If you have need for graphics, freelance or one-shot or full-time or anything else, contact me via the email address below. I'm dependable and fast.

Lastly: we all come to this blog to be entertained and even informed, and I think there isn't a reader here who hasn't appreciated the grace and human decency that lie beneath every one of his snarky posts. I assure you that hanging out with the guy is every bit like a live version of this blog, and that the grace and decency stands out above all else. He is, in a word, a mensch.

Thanks again to all of you. You're a good bunch, and when it's someone else's turn I will be there to help as readily as you have been.

I think the old definitions of "work" and "having a job" are gone and done and over forever, and that when all is said and done scrubbing toilets for food will be the new MBA.

P.S. I think it would have been beyond awesome if Roy had titled this entry MAN BOOB, PT. 3

My second (well, second and a half) job out of college was at an alt-weekly. It was bought by an idiot with about $15-20m in debt. The first thing he did was fire the entire art department and consolidate all the work in the newspapers he & his siblings took over from his parents. Which had awful art departments. (Later the company went bankrupt and the paper was sold for $3m.)

So the editors, who had previously had an extraordinary staff to work with (including a woman who does a bunch of Thrill Jockey's albums) had to spend hours swapping huge files over FTP, basically every time we had to make a change to the paper. It took a year and a half of fighting to get an in-house designer again.

Anyhow, I kicked in a bit. Best of luck, John. I think there's actually still a need out there for good designers and it'll remain so, it's just that the business aspect of so many things is so fucked (at the paper I worked for, being purchased with so much debt just torched a bunch of money and accomplished nothing), it's putting a lot of people out of work who don't need to be.

Thank you sir! I always enjoy your contributions to the conversation.

Roy's vessel has managed to collect the savvyist and most snarktacular congregation of barnacleson any bow on the blogsphere.

    Best wishes, buddy.

  21. Yeah? On a post requesting donations for a friend, Tripe Plenty's only comment to Roy is "I have no money for this dude and I might think about reading your book someday, if I can be arsed" and I'm the prat? Sure.

And to the Venture Bro's fan who turned me on to Archer, thanks.

I have already considered sending along a couple of recordings of an ancient band recently reunited for your examination. Thanks for the invite. We tend towards the Punk, Rock, Surf, with occasional forays into the Rhythm and Grove.

I may also be inclined to dust off and edit an old piece on the genius of James Jamerson that might be worthy of inclusion.

    Thanks and Best wishes!
