Sort of OT, but I just can't res...All true....

Sort of OT, but I just can't resist. Rod's latest is a post entitled "Stay Home, Write There," using a quote from somebody else to advise young writers to do just that. To eschew traveling to "the coasts" and do their writing in their small hometowns.
The lack of self awareness here is absolutely breathtaking! For those who don't know, RD left home after college, and spent years bopping around from one big city to another (Dallas, New York, DC, etc). Only very recently, again, in connection with his book exploiting his small town sister's death, has he "gone home again." But, Rod, being Rod, he not only is now all about being a small town guy, somehow, everyone else should be one too. And the fact that he himself left home to find academic and professional success, for decades, doesn't even trigger in his tiny little mind that he should, maybe, ya' know, not be so quick to advise others to do what he says rather than what he did. If you were to bring it up to him, he would say "of course that is all true, but blah, blah, blah, so shut up, liberal."

And, to top of it off, Rod's example of the small town writer staying home to write is Dante! Rod has been reading the Divine Comedy ,although, obviously, he understands virtually none of it. More accurately, he has been pretending to read the Divine Comedy (looking at the pictures?), and working in references to it and Dante in two out of every three recent posts.

Rod says this:

"One of the miracles of The Divine Comedy is how a medieval Italian poet wrote about the people of his town, Florence, and his country, Italy, and thereby told a universal story that has endured for centuries."

Well, for one thing, Florence, Dante's hometown, is hardly a small town, even now. And while Dante was alive it was on its was to becoming the heart of the Renaissance Italy and, while not huge, was a thriving city state of not only cultural importance but of great economic and political power too. So that doesn't fit with the theme of the post, which is that authors don't have to leave their small towns to travel to cultural centers ("the coasts") to make their bones. Because Florence WAS a cultural center, and more.

And, for another, Dante, for political reasons, was exiled from Florence when he wrote the Divine Comedy! At one point, Dante was given a chance to return, but found the conditions too humiliating. So, Dante did not "stay" in his home town and write there. He wanted to, sure (desperately, in fact), but, still, he didn't.
And, finally, The Divine Comedy is not really "about" the people of Florence. And even to say it is about "the people of Italy" is to kinda miss the point. It is a work of "universal" importance because it addresses a universal theme, and it does so not by being set in one city or even country, but by roaming the cosmos from this world, to hell, to purgatory, to heaven. Dante not only didn't "stay home" and "write there," he didn't write about "what he knew," either.
Rod's combination of obliviousness and stupidity is really quite awesome, in its own way. He manages to pack more non sense into a short post than anyone on the web. As I mentioned elsewhere, it takes a whole, elaborate explication just to catalogue briefly how many ways and to what extent he gets every single thing wrong.philladelphialawyernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5191252.post-19777069291753067252014-01-30T23:15:15.381-05:002014-01-30T23:15:15.381-05:00The former, aka it promotes witchcraft. Also unlike that time I dressed up as a wizard for Hallowe'en, which we regularly celebrated. I mean, he always had it in for Dungeons and Dragons, but he wasn't the only one overly receptive to the "Satanism!" gobbledegook going around in the seventies. I suspect some television-preachin' anal fistula discovered something objectionable in J.K. Rowling's philosophy or lifestyle, and the word went out that HP was evil. Evil. (My problems with it are on an aesthetic level, but hey, tastes differ.) Just like the word went out that the fiendish cult of Mormonism was suddenly okay for some mysterious reason. So when my mother tried to mention Quidditch over the phone this week, boom.
