Discrimination, he noted, particularly legalized discrimination, is morally repugnant and he asked, what more reason do you need? And I agree, that's a better strategy for reaching more people than the legalese and history lessons I recommended above. Simple truths work best. Some elections come down to a few hundred votes and I agree with you that firing up your base is the way to go but some of these districts, realistically, are +15 and even +30 Republican. Just being brave and noisy on a topic really isn't actually going to swing the seat.

I don't mean that people can get out of fighting-I believe strongly in offering a meaningful alternative in every district we can. And we also have to fight at the local level against corruption and complacency among current officeholders within our own so called party.

But the idea that voters respect a "goddamn fight even for a position the voters might not initially agree with" actually...no. What happened with gay rights is what had to happen--people had to fight for their own rights, bit by bit. The biggest changes came when a movement formed that decided to fight specifically for normalization and marriage as the mode and which pushed on every front simultaneously: legislative, cultural, political, and legal. It was emphatically not led by politicians--they are if anything a lagging indicator and always will be.Aimaihttp://aimaiameye.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5191252.post-80224498897952839542014-02-28T16:38:29.463-05:002014-02-28T16:38:29.463-05:00Peas will also be served.Peas will also be served.ADHDJnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5191252.post-9317192461729942432014-02-28T14:58:05.641-05:002014-02-28T14:58:05.641-05:00I'm not much of a Landrieu fan either, I was j...I'm not much of a Landrieu fan either, I was just using her and Schumer and the ACA as examples of how Dems often aren't willing to actually fight for much. The support for gay rights has really progressed from the days when Clinton signed Don't Ask, Don't Tell because "It was the best we could get at the time", or the days when Obama himself said his belief system included the "One-Man-One-Woman" marriage model. It's the same for the ACA. The Pugs are going to try to hang the ACA, or marriage equality, or climate change, etc, around the necks of Dems anyway, and sometimes, in fact usually, voters respect a candidate's willingness to put up a goddamn fight even for a position the voters might not initially agree with. It happened with gay rights... they just kept banging away until initially wishy-washy progs came to see the value in joining them, and I'd like to believe that it could happen on other issues as well.satchnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5191252.post-57709377030900107672014-02-28T14:50:03.298-05:002014-02-28T14:50:03.298-05:00EZ-Credit Furniture! I corrected him that President Obama did actually use a Bible, and that it was Keith Ellison who chose to use the holy book of his religion. My dad's been a union man all his life, and was the person who explained to me that Mormonism is an evil cult, but he supported Mitt the pension-robbin' Mormon because "he shares our values." I remember in 2008, one of my TX cousins started talking about how Keith Ellison refused to take his oath of office using a Bible because he was a Muslim-American hater. I corrected her that the oath had to be taken on a particular book(it does not, no book is necessary, procedure-wise), and how the copy of the Koran he did take the oath on was one that was owned by Thomas Jefferson. Since my father and I have the reputation of being the brains of the family(not hard to do when it's a family from TX), she accepted what I said.

That isn't easy, given the 24-hour, 7 days a week RW news sources that tell lies all the time about us, but it is necessary.

We must give them something to replace their racism and resentment. The only thing worse than Mary Landrieu, for example, would be the republican who would take her place.
It has well been said that the Republican party is split between its money wing and its social conservative wing--the money people have the goals and the right wing economic vision, the social cons have the actual bulk of the votes. Thats true for the *&^% Democratic party as well--there's a money party which is more or less entirely right wing in an economic sense though socially liberal, and then there are the voters who (for the most part) are more to the left economically but who may be more conservative socially than their leadership. If you try to add in the Reagan Democrats and the angry white ethnic voter you get a potential voting base which is sometimes substantially more retrograde than the money party on social issues while it may be quite confused about its economic needs. Those are working class whites who vote Republican because they think there's no "free lunch" and they are sure that the democrats are giving the store away to the blahs.

Its complicated, in other words. I vote Democratic because its the only game in town if I want to pursue even moderately humane international and domestic policies. I'm not under any illusions that there aren't time servers, corrupt assholes, aristocratic factions, hedge fund billionaires, racists, sexists, and etc... in the party. Also: mysteriously, there are a fuckton of racists, sexists, thieves and lowlives among the voters and among the potential voting base.

Landrieu however is a perfect case in point: she comes from a political dynasty and has won in the past. She's a terrible person--really an awful person--but you have to show me the better Democratic candidate who can actually pull the lousy voters to vote democratic down there and then you have to push that person into position to run and then you have to run the pants off them. In the absence of such a person you have to hope that Chuck Schumer and Landrieu actually know how to get over on the voters. If Mary Landrieu though she could get actual real life democratic and independent votes by skull fucking a kitten on tv you can bet your boots she'd do it. She wouldn't then necessarily vote a good democratic line, and certainly not against her own financial interests, but she'd pose as a reformer if she thought it could get her the votes. A red state like hers is not just chock full of actual leftist voters pining to vote for a real leftist.Aimaihttp://aimaiameye.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5191252.post-24073109354436160232014-02-28T12:03:35.384-05:002014-02-28T12:03:35.384-05:00As long as I can watch these double-featured with ...As long as I can watch these double-featured with The Seven Samovars, cause I'm gonna be thirsty.Magathanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5191252.post-57321990791484580112014-02-28T11:26:56.315-05:002014-02-28T11:26:56.315-05:00"The same kind of bias informs lot of Israeli..."The same kind of bias informs lot of Israeli/Palestinian talk in the USA."

Hooray for Zionism!
