Certainly, things might have been different if the events had unfolded in heavily armed states such as Oklahoma or Texas — or, for that matter, if someone in an adjacent office had been possessed of a rifle of his own. He's also pissed that New York City isn't flooded with Saturday Night Specials like in the old days -- then they'd be really safe! Cooke might like to study up on local history a little.
My favorite, though, is Cooke's colleague Matthew Continetti on the subject (h/t Adam Serwer):
Nor do I recall liberals standing up for the critics of global warming and evolutionary theory, of same-sex marriage and trans rights and women in combat, of riots in Ferguson and of Obama’s decision to amnesty millions of illegal immigrants. On the contrary: To dissent from the politically correct and conventional and fashionable is to invite rebuke, disdain, expulsion from polite society, to court the label of Islamophobe or denier or bigot or cisnormative or misogynist or racist or carrier of privilege and irredeemable micro-aggressor. For the right to offend to have any meaning, however, it cannot be limited to theistic religions. You must have the right to offend secular humanists, too. These people have not been deprived of their "right to offend" -- they have been offensive, and the people they offended took offense. I don't remember any of these guys getting shot by black-masked liberals. They did get called names, but I'm not finding anything in the Constitution that protects them from that. Well, what can you expect from someone who wrote a whole book about the "persecution" of Sarah Palin by the "elite media," which left her begging for scraps at the side of the road.
I applaud the sentiments of the surviving Charlie Hebdo cartoonist and like to think Obama, in skipping (to the harrumphs of dumbbells) the Paris march headed by international free speech celebrities, has provided his own concurrence.
UPDATE. Commentary announces in a pouty headline that because Obama didn't go to Paris, he is "No Longer Leader of the Free World." Guess now it's Bibi Netanyahu, huh? Oh, who am I kidding -- for Commentary it was always Netanyahu.
UPDATE 2. The Crazy Jesus Lady snarls:
UPDATE 3. As you might expect, Fedora of Freedom Roger L. Simon raises the crazy stakes:
UPDATE 2. The Crazy Jesus Lady snarls:
The march was, at bottom, a preening and only symbolic show? When has this White House ever shown an aversion to preening and symbolic shows?Yeah, remember when he marched in Ferguson? Also, where's his flag pin?
UPDATE 3. As you might expect, Fedora of Freedom Roger L. Simon raises the crazy stakes:
Now I admit that was just a supposition. Just because I’ve never heard [Obama] link Islam and terror doesn’t mean in his heart of hearts he doesn’t. Though not a genius, he does have an IQ in triple digits and sees what’s right in front of his nose, I assume. He just interprets it differently. But why?
Is someone whispering in his ear?
Senator Dianne Feinstein has just informed us that, yes, there are Islamic terror sleeper cells in our midst in the USA. If that’s true, I wonder why Feinstein wasted so much of her time wounding the CIA during the last weeks of her tenure as Senate Intelligence Committee chair, but never mind. Could there be one of those cells in the White House? And in case you were charitably disposed to think he's kidding --
I started this post thinking it was kind of funny...Of course, "bullshitting" is not quite the same thing as kidding.
Preach!
ReplyDeleteMore guns for the French? What's the point? They'll only throw them down and surrender, hurr hurr.
ReplyDeleteSweet Jesus, Matthew Continetti really seems to believe that "persecute", "oppress", and "argue against" are all synonyms. Which explains why he also thinks Sarah Palin died for our sins.
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, how many times has a mass shooting been stopped by an armed civilian out of the hundreds that have happened in America? Like 2?
ReplyDeleteThat just means we need moar gunz!!!!!
ReplyDelete'Could an average group of dispersed concealed carriers have taken on a couple of guys with automatic weapons and rocket launchers? Maybe. Maybe not. Every situation is different.'
ReplyDeleteHaving proven that he can't really prove his point he goes on to bloviate for 926 MORE WORDS, all because he functions under the delusion that he needs to protect himself from anyone other that than a functional editor.
Max Perkins wept.
Also, am I correct in saying that such intellectual equivocation is known as "going the full Goldberg"?
ReplyDeleteAlong with "assassinate."
ReplyDeleteAw, he's so cute. He's discovered how to whine that disagreement is the same thing as oppression.
ReplyDeletei wholly sympathize with continetti; i know my first thoughts when i heard about the charlie hebdo attacks were about me and my friends' feelings.
ReplyDeletePretty great to hear how all liberals are now hypocrites for supporting Charlie Hebdo because just last year Condi Rice personally decided not to speak at a university when she learned not every student was a fan.
ReplyDeleteHe must mistake it for "aassholinate".
ReplyDeleteMr. Continetti is in a prime position to demonstrate his support for the right to offend by publishing Charlie Hebdo's "Holy Trinity three-way cartoon". Meanwhile, Cooke has proposed something that I would have thought guys like him might not be enthusiastic about: armed blasphemers.
ReplyDeleteCertainly, things might have been different if the events had unfolded in heavily armed states such as Oklahoma or Texas — or, for that matter, if someone in an adjacent office had been possessed of a rifle of his own.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the death toll would have been much higher due to the resultant crossfire.
I am beginning to think that these guys will only be truly, truly satisfied if they, themselves, are attacked, in their offices, on camera, and get to pull out the heat and go down in their own blaze of righteousness. "We died with our slippers on..." might be their epitaph. And what for? Endless and intolerable whining, a social tinnitus that no one could live with any longer.
ReplyDeleteWisecracks...the most lethal weapon in the terrorists' arsenal!
ReplyDeleteCooke must hover constantly over the news feed, looking for any excuse to re-post his tediously verbose NRA propaganda. Usually they begin "No doubt the same discredited arguments for more gun control will be aired following [insert name of latest gruesome shooting]" so he would have been excited to have a new excuse to hang his shop-worn points on.
ReplyDeleteContinetti seems to be arguing for the right to laugh and point at folks who believe the world is round.
ReplyDeleteTeach the controversy!
ReplyDeleteUh, Roy? That stuff isn't glory !!!
ReplyDeleteHere ya go -
ReplyDeleteWear the t-shirt!
ReplyDeletehttp://controversy.amorphia-apparel.com/imgproduct/flatearth.jpg
Man, I wish Continetti's first names were something like Irving Nimrod, just so we could use the initials at every mention.
ReplyDeleteSo I wonder what the response will be if some "lone wolf" ISIS idolizer buys his arsenal at a gun show (no background check!) and his 300-round magazines off the internet (you can't regulate that!) and his crates of ammo wholesale from his local gun shop (no restrictions on bulk ammo!!!). Probably just be a push to mandate that every man, woman, and child must be armed at all times.
ReplyDelete...no "probably" about it. That's exactly what they want, and they say it plainly every time it happens.
ReplyDelete'Could an average group of dispersed concealed carriers have taken on a couple of guys with automatic weapons and rocket launchers?
ReplyDeleteNo.
It's dolts like this who think they're going to "defend their rights against the government." Sure ya will, Sparky. I'll spot you any weapon short of a tactical nuke for you to use against a fully functional platoon of average Army infantry at your front door. Good luck!
'Could an average group of dispersed concealed carriers have taken on a couple of guys with automatic weapons and rocket launchers? Maybe. Maybe not. Every situation is different.'
ReplyDelete...that's why we need to allow concealed automatic rocket launchers into our schools and playgrounds. Every situation is different, and the Fully Protected Man knows to be prepared.
Or, maybe Abed Whetter.
ReplyDeleteSo if I understand this correctly: because fundamentalist lunatics killed an asshole cartoonist and people think that's wrong, Mark Steyn should have licence to commit libel?
ReplyDeleteEvery time logic and principle try to sneak into the NatReview crib, these guys strangle them to death like baby Heracles.
For the Lord so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son to have harsh words twittered against him.
ReplyDeleteMinefields. Only solution. In our schools, in our streets and in our offices. Try and come at us now Mahomet!
ReplyDeleteSay what you want about No Man's Land...at least it kept those fucking kids off our lawns!
ReplyDeleteWhy is that guy with a beard orbiting gently off the port side?
ReplyDeleteI'm from out of town. How much for a half Goldberg?
ReplyDeleteThat must be the Prof hisownself. I'm wondering about the 3 little orbs suspended over the roulette wheel. Are they lights?
ReplyDeleteFirst they came for the kicky high-heel leather boots, and I said nothing, for I was not Condi Rice...
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought it was turtles all the way down.
ReplyDeletecover themselves in glory
ReplyDeleteIs that what the kids are calling it?
. . . the same discredited arguments . . .
ReplyDeleteAnd by "discredited" he means "the arguments to which we gun nuts have no coherent or rational response beyond hand waving or threatening to kill those who disagree with us."
Yes, exactly. But not noticing this is an important part of being an NRA water carrier. Just like not noticing that "an armed society is a polite society" is crazy and wrong.
ReplyDeleteFriendly bullets don't add to the official count. duh.
ReplyDeleteIt's NRA (and USA) rules.
I want to plant a nice border of perennials around this comment.
ReplyDelete"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the bitter tears of wingnuts."
ReplyDeleteA rather touchy climate scientist named Michael Mann — subtly parodied in Interstellar — has sued National Review and Mark Steyn for disagreeing with him.
ReplyDeleteIf by disagreeing with him you mean "for comparing him to Jerry Sandusky" and calling him a fraud. I'm not big on libel suits generally, but I'm not too big on lying about them either. Wingers lack the chops to argue and they seem to confuse whining with rhetoric, but why do they have such difficulty telling the truth?
why do they have such difficulty telling the truth?
ReplyDeleteTruth is a construct for liberals.
Besides, telling the truth in the Mann case would mean admitting they libeled the guy. Even their liberal lawyers would tell them it's not a good idea to confess in print when you're fighting in court.
What is truth?
ReplyDeleteIs truth unchanging law?
We both have truths
Are mine the same as Yours?
This was born the RTKBNukes movement.
ReplyDeleteI have thought for years that if I were in charge of al Qaeda, I'd gather up a couple dozen guys, each armed with an AR-15 and lots of extra rounds, and send them, one each, to a Walmart at about 4am the day after Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteAnd the fascinating thing is, until they actually started shooting, we would not have committed any crimes.
I think this might be a case of over-watering leading to root rot.
ReplyDeleteWell, as Continetti would point out, if you've ever expressed outrage over misogyny or racism, then that's a sure sign that your secular humanist hypocrisy is showing. After all, everyone knows that there's no such thing as a theist who's a feminist, an ecologist, a supporter of gay rights or an advocate of immigration reform ("What you do for the least of these?" Yeah right, comrade). If you think you're any kind of believer and yet you hold any of these positions, then clearly you're not a real believer-in-whatever-you-think-you-believe-in.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the shooters looked like average open-carry White folks, they'd probably have the police helping them get into position at any WalMart in Texas.
ReplyDeletean advocate of immigration reform ("What you do for the least of these?" . . .)
ReplyDeleteAttention Bible Bangers! Those of you so fond of quoting Leviticus might stop skipping over the verses that state, "Thou shalt not oppress the stranger in your land."
Thanks to Facebook comments and blogs, We Are All Solzhenitsyn.

ReplyDeleteWhat could possibly go wrong?
Continetti can't figure out how to square rural anti secular forces with his idea of humanist oppression so he just takes a big word shit.
ReplyDeleteHe's cut out of the same cloth as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. His party has been one of the primary economic funders and enablers of anti modernists everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if there are pictures of Matthew's father in law shaking hands with Gulbuddin, or some of his Pakistani bag men.
Getting down on the floor and trying to find pores in the concrete to squeeze your ass into is a strong reflex. It's hard to find your handgun when you're trying to crawl into the bottom drawer of your desk.
ReplyDeleteI'd like the ghost of Sam Peckinpah to direct this comment.

ReplyDeleteCertainly, things might have been different if the events had unfolded in heavily armed states such as Oklahoma or Texas — or, for that matter, if someone in an adjacent office had been possessed of a rifle of his own.
ReplyDeleteSure, cause we've never had cases of workplace shooters in the US, have we now?
Well, never at the NRA headquarters, which proves his point.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin drank a Big Gulp for our sins.

To dissent from the politically correct and conventional and fashionable
ReplyDeleteis to invite rebuke, disdain, expulsion from polite society.
What do these people know of polite society?
I've often thought this about the "racial profiling by the TSA" comments. Why doesn't Al Quaeda use little old white ladies or blonde bimbos like Ann Coulter as suicide bombers?
ReplyDeleteWhere' A'Tuin?

ReplyDeleteSteyn's lawyers have stopped representing him since he won't keep his big mouth shut about the case. Personally, I think he's playing to lose, since as a Canadian citizen he can always just have the National Review mail his checks to him. If he refuses to pay the judgement against him (it's hard to imagine any circumstance in which he wins the case) and somehow gets barred from the US (unlikely) he'd just crank the whining up to 11 and watch the idiot wingnut checks roll in.
ReplyDeleteYou kids today are all soft! . Back in MY day, to be a martyr, you had to actually die!
ReplyDeleteOh god, they think "Dr. Mann" in Interstellar was a shout-out to them. That's adorable.
ReplyDeleteThat might work for him, but NR is still on the hook.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a lawyer, so I have no idea what the enforceability of civil judgments might be outside the country. Do we have any agreements with Canada about that?
Also, too: Does "The Human Steyn" own any property here in the US?
Well yeah... that's why we CALL it "polite society"...
ReplyDelete613 laws in the Old Testament, and the only one they're enthusiastic about is "No homos."
ReplyDeleteHe can always hang out with Kathy Shaidle and Adam Yoshida. They deserve each other.
ReplyDeleteMisbegotten, surely?
ReplyDeleteWhen John Allen Muhammad and Lee Malvo were terrorizing the D.C./Northern Va area in 2002, I was afraid of just that, especially since, thanks to the NRA, people on the Terrorist Watch List can't have their Second Amendment rights infringed.
ReplyDeleteOf course she was persecuted by the "lamestream media"; it certainly wasn't because she continues her general trends of incoherence and vindictiveness; apparently, even Billy Kristol isn't returning her calls these days.

And, as I noted below, with the nationwide push to allow open carry everywhere, today's terrorists could strap on all their weapons and ammo and stroll unmolested into any shopping mall. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if Georgia's "GUNS EVERYWHERE!!!" law allowed for people to bring loaded AR-15s into the stadium for Atlanta Braves games.
ReplyDeleteImagine the carnage when the bad buys start shooting, and then every yahoo in the stadium pulls out a short-barrel handgun and starts blasting away in the general direction of the bad guys.
"The Crazy Jesus Lady snarls:

OT (sort of) but I read a Tweet recently that said, "'Dancing with the stars' is the gay version of 'sleeping with the fishes.'"
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Atlanta!
ReplyDeleteFortunately for those attending Atlanta Braves' games, there is indeed a strict "no weapons" policy at Turner Field stadium.

Metal detectors are used at all entry points into the stadium.
Excellent! Thanks!

They don't mind people taking offense at their offensiveness. What they hate is the fact that the people they offend now have enough power and security to tell them to shut up.
Oh, for the good old days when you could make gay jokes for hours on end and no one would say anything for fear of being beat up and/or institutionalized.
I thought that last bit was "No Homers" like in the "Stonecutters" episode of the Simpsons.
ReplyDeleteCertainly, things might have been different if the events had unfolded in heavily armed states such as Oklahoma or Texas — or, for that matter, if someone in an adjacent office had been possessed of a rifle of his own.
ReplyDeleteOh yes --- because having guns would have really helped when Little Timmy McVeigh decided to blow up a building IN OKLAHOMA.
If only they'd armed that pre-school that was located just above where McVeigh parked the truck. Those toddlers could have taken him out with a few well-placed snipers.
ReplyDeleteIt was Scary Sarah who brought this phenomenon to fever pitch when she said, in essence, that disagreeing with her (or worse, laughing at her) was a denial of her free speech. It's not just that they're unclear on the concept, it's that they're sure that we all have to endlessly sit there quietly and take the abuse, the lies, the moronic judgments because it's a right-wing nutjob doing the talking. Part of this is due to their longstanding belief that they're the only adults in the country--and children had better not talk back to the adults--and the remainder is a kind of whiny authoritarianism (along the lines of "just wait until we're completely in charge, muhfuckers").
ReplyDeleteWe're at the point now that disagreement--even laughing at them--simply doesn't work. It just makes them crazier, spookier, ever more deranged.
It is time for tactical cream pies.
Al-Quaeda hasn't bothered to attempt any attacks in the US because they don't need to. We're cheerfully killing enough innocent people with drones to keep them supplied with recruits, sympathizers, and money. Having three dolts (who brings their ID to a terror strike?) kill some people in Paris is enough to keep half the US deranged.
ReplyDeleteThe right wing is infested with individuals with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
ReplyDeleteAs if the Lord couldn't have begotten a few million more sons and or daughters if he wanted. Unless, of course, he isn't all-powerful in a certain way.
ReplyDeleteYup. If the events had unfolded in heavily armed states such as Oklahoma, the rootin' tootin' patriots would have been the perpetrators.
ReplyDeleteNo, he's arguing for the right to laugh and point at folks who believe the world is round, and not be laughed and pointed at in return. Because refuting a reactionary dumbshit is indistinguishable from a murderous assault by masked gunmen.
ReplyDelete"When has this White House ever shown an aversion to preening and symbolic shows?"
ReplyDelete... she squawked, before going back to masturbating in front of her poster of George W. Bush in a goddamned flight suit.
It's ALMOST LIKE THEY DON'T KNOW SHIT or more obviously, they don't care.
ReplyDeleteCertainly, the heavily armed psychopaths at the Branch Davidian compound totally support this comment.
ReplyDeleteI think they want to survive an attack. You can't ride the Wingnut Gravy Train if you're in a coffin.
ReplyDeleteIt sure helped at Ft. Hood.
ReplyDeleteI say we let Skynet be a rightwing project. That way, there's no chance it will become self-aware.

ReplyDeletePlease pick up your winning Internets at the door.
ReplyDelete"Certainly, things might have been different if the events had unfolded in heavily armed states such as Oklahoma or Texas..."
ReplyDeleteJesus, these people. Of COURSE, things MIGHT have been different... if everyone in the office were armed; if every person carrying a gun actually knew the front from the back, or their ass from a hole in the ground; if this had happened in Tulsa, the Paris of the Plains, instead of the real Paris; if Jean-Claud Van Damme the time cop had travelled from 1994 into the future to take out the shooters before they could kill anyone... What self-respecting wingnut pundit couldn't get at least five posts out of "Things Might Have Been Different If"?
I dunno.. how self-aware do you have to be to follow the Wingnut Prime Directive: "Kill anyone who's different"?
ReplyDeleteNot even a tomahawk?
ReplyDeleteThis would be the France with 31.2 guns per 100 people, right?
ReplyDeleteCount me among those who note Bill "Always fucking wrong about everything" Kristol's snubbing of La Palin in re: the 2016 TeaOP Klown Kar and are reassured. I mean, a Palin-less campaign--even if only in the Primaries--would be like Larry and Curly without Moe, a tornado without a trailer park, a Thanksgiving dinner without Miracle Whip pizza and a Glock 17 Jello mold. OK, I didn't really mean that last one...
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I've spent my working life in professional and mostly congenial workplaces, but even so I can think of several instances where everyone around the conference table being armed would have been a very, very bad idea.

ReplyDeleteThe Unitarian Universalist church hosted a youth performance of Annie Jr. Some 200 people were watching the performance by 25 children when Adkisson ... pulled a Remington Model 48 12-gauge shotgun out of a guitar case and began firing.... (claimed to be motivated by hatred of democrats, liberals, African Americans & Gays.)
The shooter was stopped when church members John Bohstedt, Robert Birdwell, Arthur Bolds, and Terry Uselton and visitor Jamie Parkey restrained him.
Buzzfeed cites nine since 1997 -- so one every two years. However, if you actually read, four involved armed off-duty cops; that brings it to one every 3.6 years. And of those, in the Clackamass one, it is not 100% clear (to me) that the shooter even saw the armed civilian (who was definitely brave, and acted 100% professionally); an account I read at the time indicated the shooter retreated because cops arrived. So, there've been 4 or 5 armed-civilian day-savings in 18 years, or possibly one every 4.5 years. That is great. But Adam Lanza's own mother had plenty of guns and that didn't prevent Newtown. http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/10-potential-mass-shootings-that-were-stopped-by-someone-wit#.us7pZJQ1j
