FRIDAY AROUND-THE-HORN.

•  Hey, guess who got in on Ferguson: Maggie Gallagher. I'm not kidding! If you know her work as head of the Anti-Sex League, you'll know her passive-aggressive style, which she replicates here: A lot of shit about Michael Brown ("'That Indian clerk he roughed up was so small. He must have been so scared'") and love for the cops,  followed by a bullshit plea for tolerance:
We have to find a way out of tribalism, back to America.

During my years leading the fight against gay marriage, there were so many efforts to paint a picture of me as motivated by anti-gay hatred, and there were so many people hoping I would respond in kind. Some who opposed gay marriage even criticized me for refusing to strike back. They saw my gestures of respect for gay-marriage advocates as a desperate attempt to placate, rather than as a refusal to become the caricature my opponents hoped to make me.

To make something good improbably come out of Ferguson will require work from both sides of the racial and political divide.
If this were a vaudeville sketch, this is where the cops and the protesters would stop fighting and unite to beat up Maggie Gallagher. Also in the article: "I don’t want to respond with tit-for-tat stories about race," followed by tit-for-tat stories about race, and many other such examples of the Gallagher method which lead me to believe that even the racists won't be returning her calls.

•  At The Federalist, Daniel Payne is disgusted that Richmond, Virginia joined the National School Lunch Program so those little moochers statists like to call "children" will get free food:
It’s bad enough that we’ll have more students belly up to the government food trough (if you’ve never had a taste of “free” government lunch, consider yourself lucky); instead, consider RPS Superintendent Dana Bedden’s positive gushing about the new program: “I like it for the health and nutrition aspect, but this also removes the stigma of free lunch. Everyone can eat.”
Ah, “stigma:” one of the last great impediments to full-blown government dependency.
Whereas if we had the little bastards clean toilets for their gruel, it'd be morally-educational. Alas,  "The Left wants the citizenry as dependent upon government as possible," says Payne. Because what other possible reason would they have for using tax dollars to feed children?

•  The strenuous efforts of Reason editors to pump up their moment in the media spotlight despite the avalanche of demurrers and protests from the conservatives on whom they rely for coalition -- here's the latest one from lawn-order scold John Podhoretz -- have convinced me that the Libertarian Moment is something  like the Summer of George.

Truly. It will take the side composed of those people rioting in defense of a clerk-menacing darkie thug, working together with us supporters of the godly, always-in-the-right police who shot that thug down in the street and let him lie there, like the animal he so obviously was. Now let's all join hands and sing Kumbaya (It's okay, Negro cooties wash off more easily than homosexual deviant cooties).

Oh this is rich. Maggie showed up one day to troll a pro-gay-marriage post on Washington Monthly - anonymously - or so she thought. It didn't occur to her that the moderators could see her real email and IP addresses. Not only was she NOT respectful to the community advocating gay marriage, once she got her ass handed to her in the debate she resorted to the old "Well, I'm going to heaven and you're all going to hell - so nyaaah!"

I am not even fucking kidding you.

You'd like to think that these people who see themselves as guardians of society's "values" had at least a modicum of emotional maturity or sanity and that maybe they've just reasoned out the issues wrong, but after a while you realize that it's BECAUSE they lack emotional maturity or sanity that they've become self-appointed guardians of society's values.

It's pretty obvious that being too poor to feed your child is something to which we all aspire. And, as liberals, feeding hungry children is a sure-fire way to guarantee that we never run out of ways to spend tax dollars. After all, isn't spending tax dollars just for the sake of spending them the only thing we actually believe in? And we can't just keep making government bigger--that would put too many people to work, and we need them dependent on the government so we can make government bigger to deal with uh, whuh, uh . . .

  102. I suppose this made more sense when it was possible for a larger percentages of households to get by with just one member working full time. You know, back when minimum wage did what it was supposed to do.

But since the GOP hates to throw anything out, it continues with the same old schtick, even after it has made its ideal impossible for most people to achieve. Which is great if all you want is reasons to sneer at people and tell them they suck.

Not really, Maggie. Firing every single member of the harassment / shakedown racket currently operating as "Ferguson PD" would certainly be a good start and conveniently requires very little cooperation from your band of racists.

Okay, Maggie, let's compromise. We give up our vague threats to punch storekeepers, and you'll give up the aerial drones, shotguns, stun grenades, tear gas grenades, grenade launchers, microwave pain rays, surveillance cameras, automatic rifles, pepper spray, Tasers, APCs, water cannons, attack dogs, rubber bullets, night-vision goggles, and riot shields, mmmmkay?

both sides of the racial divide

The racial divide doesn't have two sides, it has a top and bottom. It's a fucking cliff, with us white folks standing at the top, and everybody else at the bottom, dodging piss, bricks, and garbage, wondering what the fuck?!

Remember back in the 00s when you'd hear these inspiring stories about mass airline flight walkouts? Two people would talk about a soccer match or something in Arabic, the rest of the passengers would refuse to board the same plane, the airline did some last minute rescheduling and we were all supposed to admire these outspoken goobers.

Safety is the last refuge of the scoundrel when it's not the first. Michael Brown was inherently threatening, justifying the lethal action of Darren Wilson just as it would have an over-aggressive neighborhood watch captain or an asshole who gets possessive over parking lots.

All they need to do in order to feed their children better is to sell the occasional child for meat. This idea hasn't been floated in awhile, but I believe its time has come.

I note with much dismay that the people who supposedly stormed off airliners were also quite vocal about the need for genocide against Muslims, and quite vigorous in support of torture. They also thought the "free speech zones" were an excellent idea, and were thrilled as the police rioted against the Occupy movement. And here, today, they're once again working overtime to explain and excuse how another Black man deserved execution in the streets.

I wonder what country these people grew up in, because the one they want is not the one I knew.

How do they think this works . . .?

In all seriousness, this is how they think it works: Conservatives want smaller government and lower taxes. Conservatives oppose Liberals. Therefore, Liberals want bigger government and higher taxes.

The best way to get people to support higher taxes and bigger government is to get people to depend on government, and the best way to do that is to make them depend on government for food, housing, clothing, healthcare, etc.

This really is their chain of reasoning. The foundational notion of it all is government and taxes are evil. From there, everything else flows.

His point is that the free government lunches should come in bright red boxes that have shrieking sirens wired into the lid, and the recipients should be forced to wear bright yellow spork patches sewn into their left breast. The food can be the same--it's the stigma that's missing.
